I for one now have no reason to part with the Turbo.

With root, all bloat can be eliminated, not just disabled. It also allows for the running of custom ROMs, such as CM or Blisspop, which can lead to battery battery life.
As an example, my old G2 was rooted and Rom'd and I could get 9 hours screen time out of its "puny" 3000 mah battery.
Also, there will likely be custom Marshmallow roms for the Turbo before it's ever made official for us.

It's not really. I am using the Turbo on ATT right now. The phones are unlocked now. The big V just wants you to think its not.

Great! Looking forward to some straightforward instructions on how to get root on the Turbo. I've had the Turbo nearly since it came out and I've forgotten all about how to deal with bootloader unlocks and TWRP and all that stuff.

You can break your phone by putting horrible ROM's in that are all generally crap. When you do this, make sure you complain about features that used to work fantastic now don't work for crap.

To counter that point, Negative Nancy, removing a problem ROM and going back to a working one is as simple as a few taps with TWRP.

Root is not for everyone. It allows access to parts of the system that are normally restricted. If one doesn't know what they are doing, it's possible to brick the phone. However, a little knowledge and common sense goes a long way in making a rooted phone much more enjoyable than stock.

You can have good experiences and bad experiences rooting. Most people realize this coming into it. Rooting my old Droid Incredible led to a host of issues. So when my S3 starting acting up, instead of rooting it I just started using a new launcher. That gave me what I needed.

I fully recognize that a launcher and root are two very separate things, but for those people who may only want some slight "tweaks" to their phone, a launcher (no root required) might be the better way to go. I use Nova Launcher on my Turbo and love the versatility of it.

Here's a short outline of the the steps, although you should read the full instructions.

1. WIFI must be on for the whole process
2. You must gain temporary root with KingRoot (Free)
3. Once you have temporary root you need to go into the KingRoot settings and deselect and then reselect authorizing root
4. Next you run Sunshine and if it works you pay $25 over the air and your phone's bootloader is unlocked.

At this point your DROID Turbo is just like a "developer edition" or "pure edition".

After you are unlocked you can uninstall king root, and then flash TWRP recovery and use it to install superusersu. And you now have an unlocked and rooted device.

Lots of folks have gotten stymied and the advice is keep trying. I had to do a total backup of my phone using Wondershare's MobileGo and back up my phone's home screens (I use Nova Launcher, so it's easy to do) and then factory default reset my phone before unlocking was successful.

Obvious warning, you should know what you are doing, as this give you the ability to screw up your device.

My only affiliation with the folks who developed this is that of a (happy) customer.

my phone is awesome, rooted with sunshine, computerfreek's rom, xposed framework with gravitybox, adaway, and volumeboost.

I don't think that ROMs are available yet because rooting the Lollipop Turbo was impossible until one week ago. Now the developer community has to get to work. You can follow what's up on xda-developers.com.

The main reason I rooted my Turbo was to install an apk called Android Native SBS, which makes your whole android OS and Apps view in Side By Side mode for use with Virtual Reality headsets like Google Cardboard, Oculus, etc. I have a Homidi headset that I picked up for a 30% discount at droid-life.com. The Android Native SBS apk would allow the viewing of standard apps like Netflix and Slingplay (I have a slingbox) in the headset.

The Android Native SBS app only works on rooted devices. But so far I'm stymied because while it does work with Lollipop 5.0, it doesn't work with Lollipop 5.1. So I'm waiting until it is improved so it does work. I love watching movies in the headset - it's like being in a cinema with a huge screen.

Other than that I have been having some fun with tasker and it's Secure Settings + plug in (pro version is either $1.50 or 1.99 - can't remember) which makes tasker way more powerful.

I like the fact that in a year or so, when the 2014 Turbo is "ancient" hopefully there will a great ROM to keep the device moving forward.

And nickjy12a, if you find something great in xposed framework or the like could you please report it back here.

also greenify for the back to kitkat battery life.
i cant say its all fast and easy, i spent a whole day setting stuff up and wiped it the next day and did it over. i have it all mostly tweaked to my liking now.

roms were already available because the turbo had root with mofo on kitkat, was blocked on LP until now. and moto maxx is the exact same phone.
the xposeded modules i have installed are gravitybox, greenify, and one++. also openconnect, but that is for a specific need.

I rooted my Droid RAZR Maxx but never did anything with it. Only benefit of me having root would be to use greenify or some super-indepth battery monitor. I know some people love third party ROMs, but there is a reason why I chose Motorola over Nexus-brand.
