Hey, I am new to the scene. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus and am curious on what unlocking the boot-loader really does or what it will do for me. Please explain in detail for me what it does after unlocking or why I should do so in the most easiest way possible.
 
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install non-official software (a custom recovery, a mod, or a new ROM altogether). It is necessary if you ever want to modify your phone in any way.

When you unlock the bootloader, it completely erases your phone back to how it was out of the box. So if you think there's even the slightest chance that you'll want to experiment in the future, unlock it now before you get months and months of data saved in the phone.
