Bootloader Unlock Status - #sholesunlock

Me and my wife are relatively new to Android. This is our first adventure, we have had the Dx since day one, she is ignorant to this dark part of Android, so she loves her Dx.

Me on the other hand, they say ignorance is bliss and now I miss the days of not yearning for cracking this phone wide open. I have taken a step back, took a deep breath, smoked a cigarette and reminded myself I did love this phone once. With that being said THIS WILL BE MY LAST MOTO_DROID (that sucks because the DPro looks freaking awesome and I want that phone in my pocket). I will ride the Dx in to obsoletion, then I will make sure to remind myself that Samsung and HTC support enjoying the phone I bought any way I want to.

So, hopefully as you read this you will remember you still have the best 'large screen, hi-def vid capture, 8mp camera' carrying phone on the market right now.

Dro-o-i-i-d-d-d!!!!!!!

I definately will keep this in mind when i buy a new phone in august of next year. If moto does not get this fixed , i will have no other choice but to buy something else . Its my 299.00 i use to buy the phone i want to play with . I have lost respect for moto , and think they should not be allowed to use the OPEN NETWORK that is Android .

It's only going to get worse now that Android is being put on TV's

imagine being told what to watch....

Droid does locked hardware.
Droid does controlled user experience.
Droid does anti-open.

Like others have said, Moto's build quality is awesome, but their efforts to control user experience have left a rotten taste in my mouth. I will be watching to see what LTE devices roll out of HTC. I'm hoping for an aluminum-bodied, top-end device. The plastic construction of the Dinc killed that phone for me, but the Merge looks to be aluminum construction, at least in part, so I'm hopeful about what will be produced with LTE technology.

I just wish google had a way to just give us plain android and we could bypass everything moto and the phone would be open for fun. For most people the phone is perfect for them as is. For our group we need more open and less moto crap. Hope moto can see how we don't like this and might change their ways but I doubt it.

No way they will change. Why do you ask? Well thanks for asking! Because they have sold millions of Droid X phones just the way they are. They knew the bootloader would be given up on by these awesome developers . If the developers could have the opportunity to re build this phone then Moto knows people would stay with it and not ''upgrade '' to the next locked down phone.

I think too, it is in part the demand for an open phone is less than we think. Sure there are hundreds of us on this forum pining away for custom kernel ROM. XDA and AllDroid are full of people saying the same things we are. But for every 1 of us, there are 10, 20, maybe 50 that have the X and don't know what a ROM is, or that there are preventive locks on their phone, or even the power control widget exists.

Even if we got all the Android boards to sign a petition, it wouldn't be enough. Those of us that want to tweak and modify a phone make up such a small segment of the mobile consumer market. Everyone else doesn't care, so Moto puts these blocks in place so that people don't mess where they shouldn't and make Moto provide warranty phones.

To get Moto to change their practices, we would need enough people to refuse to purchase their phones. And getting enough people to make an impact worth their attention would be tough. I for one will be keeping a close eye on what HTC brings out for VZW's LTE network. If they have one that fits the bill, bye-bye Moto.

A boy can dream right. Google needs to bring out a phone... wait never mind. Would be nice if we could buy a phone right from google with plain android and then link it to a carrier :) I too will be looking for my next phone sometime next year. By then they might all be locked down. The locked bootloader sucks. If they locked up root I don't know what I would do. I read a phone writes over root each time its booted up. That must suck.

It appears it's not going to happen

Latest tweet from Nenolod as of last night:

non-dev droid2 and droidx running in high security mode at boot. no way to replace #mbmloader; kexec works but no radio. about 17 hours ago via web

Following most of the guys who have been working on this on Twitter, it seems like they are all dumping their DX's and moving to the Fascinate.

Needless to say, I am disappointed. However, I knew that this was going to be the case when I bought the phone. I was just hopeful that it was going to get broken.

So I have a phone that I am very happy with but will probably never be the phone it could be. I'm not sure if that will steer me away from Moto in the future but it will be part of the equation. Again, the Droid X is still the best phone I've ever owned and my complaints about it are minimal. I am deox'd, themed and rooted. Not knowing what could have been is frustrating but for now I'm happy enough that I can't imagine not being able to live with this phone till my next new every two hits. And this is the first phone out of my last four that I can actually say that.

well maybe someone else with the skills will step up.
from my observations, there is only 1 or 2 people with the skills to maybe do so. the rest of the guys (nothing against them) are going off work based on the milestone

we need to find (or pay) someone will the skills to attack this thing with a fresh perspective.. maybe even some kind of hardware based attack..
like we did with the jtag on the 360

I shed a tear when I read this thread. Curse you, Motorola!!

I made a new boot animation showing the droid locked up and the bootloader. Ill post a video tomorrow. Makes me feel better knowing when I turn my X on its locked down and it wont change.

That should be funny!

You can add HTC to your list to not like. This was posted on the T-Mobile site regarding the G2 :

Bellevue, Wash. — Oct. 7, 2010As pioneers in Android-powered mobile devices, T-Mobile and HTC strive to support innovation. The T-Mobile G2 is a powerful and highly customizable Android-powered smartphone, which customers can personalize and make their own, from the look of their home screen to adding their favorite applications and more.

The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as “rooting,” but a side effect of HTC’s security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory. As a result the original code is restored."

Moto isn't the only one playing games. Wonder how long it will take before Samsung joins in the fun?

They call it a side effect? Its not a side effect if its the primary goal. Plus, I was never aware of spontaneous code corruption that necessitated this. ...maybe I just missed something.

They were talking about this in the podcast last night. There should be a fairly easy way around this. It seems to be a better method as it will prevent people that don't know what they're doing from really messing up their phone, but those with enough knowledge should be able to bypass it.
