Question Both Pixel and S22U Fail to Deliver Gmail Notifications

Hi everyone,

Been years since I've been here!

FWIW, this issue has been brought up a lot and I've tried every fix I've read about for months, but hope to gain some more insight and learn from you.

I have a Pixel 7 on Android 14 and an S22U on Android 12 / One UI 4.1.

Both phones suffer from delayed Gmail app notifications. I have both phones fully charged, all battery optimization features off, all notification categories enabled, etc., yet when they're sitting on a table right next to my iPhone, the iPhone will *immediately* notify me of an incoming email. However, both the S22U and the P7 sit there for minutes, sometimes hours, without ever showing the email notification.

Only when I pick up and start using either phone will they "get" the push notification and show the email.

This drives me crazy as I use both Android phones for work, but have largely tabled them since I can't rely on them being consistent.

What gives? Does anyone have a definitive answer or even a hint/clue as to why this happens? Any new fixes people have discovered and can add to this thread so we can save people the headache for years to come? :)

Thanks!

Edit: I forgot to mention tha the only fix I've ever found was the adb command to disable Doze, which actually worked when I tried it months ago! My Pixel would get emails immediately just like the iPhone; the S22U would quietly sit there. However, this fix wasn't permanent and resets itself after a restart.

Update:

After re-trying all of these fixes again last night, I have two different results:

The P7 does not show any email notifications at ALL anymore; not even after I pick up the phone and start using it!

The S22U shows emails 10 minutes late, but it consistently gives the notification around that 10-minute mark (which is an improvement, I guess).

I've done this multiple times, but don't mind trying again tonight.
Hope that works
Otherwise might try web browser see if that helps on the device

These Work emails seem to cause a problem on mobile devices for some reason.

Do you think this problem is limited to Google Workspace emails? I'm not too sure about that but will test it on a personal, non-Workspace account later today.

Update: It's not limited to Google Workspace emails. In fact, the personal email address I tested actually took longer to send the notification on my phone! I waited about 20 minutes with no notification; it only popped up when I picked up the phone and started using it.

I'm going to give you a list of things to look at just give me a few to gather screenshots and block personal information of mine

Go to settings>Device Care

Check these settings to make sure they look like mine in the screen shot

Now for Gmail app itself

Long press Gmail>tap info>notifications says allowed then tap on it to bring you to other menus and follow my screenshot
When you tap notifications categories each sub menu you can tap on to gain access to other menus

You're awesome, @mustang7757 . A lot of the menus look different for me, but I made any changes that weren't already set. For example, the only real difference I saw was that the "Performance Profile" was not there, but instead I found "Processing Speed" and set it to Maximum (out of Optimized, High, and Maximum."

I also added Gmail as an excluded app from "Memory checking."

Now that you mention it, I am unsure why the phone is stuck on Android 12! I even force-checked updates but did not find anything.

Appreciate it. I'll give it a shot myself today either by flashing or with Samsung Switch to see if I can trigger the OTA.

Regarding emails, btw, it's still ~10m for notifications after all that. It was a little quicker last night, actually (2-3m), but I presume that's because I was periodically using the phone and keeping Doze at bay.

I'll report back, and thanks again for all of your help so far.

Anytime
On the pixel we can tackle another time , as I'll have to run through the settings as it's not the same as Samsung

No worries on the Pixel. I mostly flip between these two phones for work but often prefer the Samsung even though I'm a diehard Pixel fan. I will likely sell or trade in the phone at some point, so it's not crucial.

After I'm done updating the S22U, I may consider a third-party email app like K-9 or even Samsung Mail just as a temporary solution. It just sucks because I'd strongly consider coming back to Android as my main daily phone especially after RCS was announced for iPhones, but issues like this make me think twice.

I've been using Samsung email as long as I've used Samsung devices. I don't use the Gmail or Outlook apps. In my case, Samsung email typically gets notifications faster than desktop Outlook. I don't use browser based Gmail or Outlook.com on my desktop PC.
