Brand new to HTC One Verizon

Hi all, I am brand new to HTC One and Android in general. I am coming off my disappointment with BB imploding and I just have a very difficult time with iphone's new ios7(It is too small and light for my middle aged eyes).
So, I have a few questions please:

Is there a Verizon branded HTC user manual that can help me learn all the nuances of this phone?

Can I auto sync, wirelessly, my Yahoo contacts to the HTC contact app or do I have to use Google Contacts? It is not that big of a deal for me, but I prefer to continue to use Yahoo contacts if possible.

I obviously screwed something up in contacts, because every contact is either doubled or tripled. I have enabled Google Contacts and perhaps Verizon's Backup Assistant doubled up my contacts? If so, how might I go about rectifying the situation please? I seem to have two contact accounts listed: Google and Phone accounts. All I want are the Google contacts. How might I go about closing out the Phone Account?

Last question for now, Is the Mail application a universal mail app? In other words, if I set up a gmail and yahoo mail account will the mail app include both accounts or do I have to view the accounts through to separate apps?

Hi there. I'm not an expert on Android, but probably can give you some help.

A: I don't think there's any. A basic starter guide comes with the phone, but you learn all the other stuff intuitively or just google it.

A: Yes, you can. Add the your Yahoo account through the stock accounts manager and select Yahoo contacts on the HTC's Contacts Manager. However, I think that then Google will automatically upload your Yahoo contacts once it detects them on your Contacts Manager.

A: Yes, the cause for that redundace must be that you enabled backup services that store the same contacts. Go to the Contacts Manager and try disabling some services to see what happens.The contacts stored in the disabled servers should dissapear.

A: Yes and no. The Mail application works with almost every popular mail service, but some protocols are not supported. For example, it won't let you star emails on Yahoo. Regarding Gmail, I'm not sure if it is possible to syncronize it through the Mail app. I think that Google wants us to use the Gmail app anyways.

There is a Verizon branded manual for HTC one. It is on the HTC.com website under support. Select your phone (and carrier). Then select user guides. There is both a quick start guide and a full 292 page manual. The website also has a number of tutorial videos. Hope that helps.

John, I have a Z10 and have been reading a lot trying to decide which android I want. Tell me if you will what made you go choose the HTC ONE ...we're any other phones in the running?

I was, and lament not being able to continue being so, a diehard BB user. I really loved the physical keyboard. But between my PBs, Storm 1, Storm 2, 9930, Z10 and finally the Q10, I simply had enough with being disappointed by BB. So, I decided to move on after the latest round of fiascos. I had used an iphone before and immediately reactivated my iphone 5. However, the size of the screen, the size of the virtual keyboard and the new ios7 software simply do not work for me. I find that everything is simply too small and light colored for my eyes. I make so many mistakes typing. It was exhausting. I then tried the new Samsung Galaxy S4 and as far as typing goes and the ability to personalize your user experience, it is fantastic. I especially adored the fact that you could have two apps running side by side on the home screen at one time. The problem for me is that: 1.) I felt the phone was a bit too gimmicky with all the virtual stuff that Samsung included, such as being able to swipe with your eyes, etc. For me, it was more a phone for someone much younger than me. It is a great phone and software no doubt about it in my opinion. The real deal breaker though was that the physical phone felt cheap. I little too plastic. Coming off the well constructed Z and Q from BB made it hard for me to accept the S4. I read that the HTC One was better constructed and it is true. More like the Z10 in my opinion, not quite as large at the S4(which is a good thing because the S4 just feels slightly too large). The software and interface of the HTC has fewer gimmicks, but still has the personalization of the android operating system, a significantly larger screen than the iphone but not humongous like the S4. A great balance in my opinion. The only issue is that you must spend the time learning the operating system and get the phone personalized to your taste, as opposed to something like the iphone that simply works reasonably well for most people out of the box. The new Z and Q were a little like the iphone in that respect. Easy to setup and start using. The HTC requires a bit of time to get set up, but once you get it right for your personal preferences it is great. And of course, compared to the BBs, the apps are fantastic!!

I hope this has helped. The HTC is a well constructed phone, large but not phalet large screen, great apps. So far, I am happy to have switched. Think of it as a Z10 with great apps after you spend a good day getting it set to our preferences.

Thanks so much John, you really answered several questions in such a clear way, you must write for a living in some capacity! I went back to Verizon yesterday and did more hands on testing and decided I will get the HTC One. Your answer just solidifies my own decision and I really appreciate it so much. Tomorrow is upgrade day!

The HTC One is an excellent phone. One thing to consider with your Yahoo Mail though. You might want to consider using the Yahoo Mail application. I found the stock mail application to occasionally give me problems with my Yahoo account. Very rare, though.

I installed the Yahoo Mail app from the store solely for the purpose of syncing my Yahoo contacts with my HTC One. I have a Yahoo Plus account and have no problem with my mail syncing with the native mail app on the phone.

I am glad that you were not having any issues with the native mail application. I didn't get the Yahoo Plus upgrade because I prefer IMAP over POP. Is Yahoo Plus still POP? I was originally looking to sync it with Microsoft Outlook on my computer.

Yes, I see that and had only Yahoo selected. And on the phone it was fine. What I have done now is disable the Yahoo Mail App and I will see how it looks on the car shortly.
