My Son (whom thought there was no need for a custom recovery or nandroid) has got his new phone to a state that wont go past the lg logo on boot. I can get it to boot into recovery but its the stock recovery. He said he was installing the custom kernel avail here via adb but i dont know... I dont seem to be able to flash a file with the recovery. I am a noob for the LG. I was thinking of reflashing the kernel and thunderstorm but I cant get past verification. Ive tried resigning with a program ive used for my evo but no luck. How can I flash from stock recovery? Is xionia already signed? Do I need to sign differently for LG?

do you still have ADB access while the phone is trying to boot? If so go to here and attempt to manually root the phone and then follow the link to install a custom recovery. This can all be done through ADB.

I get an error when I type adb shell exec` /system/bin/sh` failed: no such file or directory
:( Any other way?

I should mention that I do have all the original img files from off the phone intact.
boot, system recovery, etc. I am no expert on adb but it still has some communication because it will restart recovery. I could really use some help here.

Then you aren't bricked man! I am not up to par on this device, but it is a matter of having the correct file to boot into. Goodluck.

If he can't get into recovery, and ADB is broken then this phone might in fact be "bricked" unless someone figures out how to access S-off in the bootloader. AFAIK there are no oficial RUU's floating around for this phone. Maybe just go back to sprint and tell them you were accepting a OTA update, and the phone shut off in the middle of it and won't boot up now.

yeah LG's recovery is a pain since they broke adb access. Does a factory reset from LG's recovery work? Without getting back into the main OS there is probably no known way to restore it.

you didnt pay close attention to opening post. verification failed when I try to flash. thnx though
sorry about your situation. Like I say, I don't know about this device, but if you can boot into recovery ( like you have been saying) then visit XDA forums and put your case on the IRC chat channel. Those fellas are good. Nandroid, the first step after root. Good luck, as long as you have a working recovery image, your not bricked.

He doesn't have a working recovery. If I am understanding correctly, his son didn't flash the recovery image and he is stuck with what LG put on the phone (which is nothing). They are working on an s-off bootloader for the p500 which is the GSM version of this phone, and it should be easy enough to port over, but you'd be without a device until then if you waited. I don't think that LG would catch on if you just brought it back to them and said "I woke up this morning and it was stuck on this screen." They probably just plug them into their computer and wipe and reflash everything immediately.

thanks all

Thanks all for the responses. From my limited knowledge, and from what im hearing, security is on with the stock recovery which is why you cant use adb. lack of permissions to copy a file over even to the sd much less system if I knew what to put where. Not sure if I can utilize the flash update.zip to get things working somehow but other than that not looking well. Th irc channel on xda maybe best advice yet.

Sorry man, I bricked my phone too while attempting the custom recovery. It wouldn't get past the LG logo, not even booting from the stock recovery. Returned it to LG claiming factory defect. It took some convincing but they did replace it with a new one.

Now I'm able to root the new phone but won't attempt custom recovery or custom ROMs until I'm 100% sure and have gotten over my brickophobia.

I can only assume that you should have adb access to the phone. First try in the cmd window at the prompt:

adb devices

If this returns a serial number then you should be good.
the type:

adb shell

if this returns a $ prompt then you have adb access

You should be able to follow the instructions in this link to unroot the phone. This give instructions on how to flash the custom recovery as well. You will need to follow the instructions exactly.
