Brightness changes when scrolling through a web page

So I just noticed this happening in the browser in a white page and the news app flipbook. The change is very subtle, but very annoying. Not looking forward to an exchange...but wanted to see if this was a phone wide issue.

Edit: just happened in tapatalk...darn

Sounds like something similar to what the DNA has. It has something to do with overly aggressive dynamic contrast I think. On the DNA some of the custom kernels *fixed* that.

Happens with auto brightness on or off. Its pretty random, but I can get it to happen 3 or 4 times per full page scroll here:

Looks like it happens in all apps and settings, especially those with white backgrounds.

Shame cause I really do like the phone. SO much easier to handle than my old Note 2. :(

There used to be autobrightness settings within browser settings, I'm not seeing it here, there is also thermal throttling. If the phone gets a certain temp, it will dim the display reguardless whether auto brightness is on or not. This can be disabled in service menu...

could it also be related to the Smart Screen feature (where it dims it if it can't detect your eyes on the screen)?

settings -> display -> uncheck smart screen

Well, I don't think its due to thermals as the device is cool to the touch right now. If I scroll down that web page it will go from dim to bright to dim 3 or 4 times. I'm also noticing it in the settings as well...its getting very annoying and will be a deal breaker if I cannot get it figured out.

Also, it is not related to the 2 smart settings in the display menu as those are both off.

Is there a content aware auto brightness somewhere? Some phones had an option where it'd adjust the brightness based on content. Definitely interested in this as its a deal breaker for me too.

Issues like this have caused me to turn off auto brightness on both my new G2 and the GS3 before that. What I do is find a solid mid-range brightness setting, then use the toggle in times where I need very low brightness or 100% brightness. In my case, I currently have the screen at 45% most of the time. No battery stats on my G2 yet, but on my GS3 I didn't notice any significant battery drain by turning off auto brightness.

I haven't noticed this myself. I tried scrolling through some longer articles on the Verge website, and didn't see any variation in brightness as I scrolled the page in Chrome. Is there a particular web site that you are hitting where this happens? Or all web sites?

I'm sensitive to this issue too, so I tried it on my G2 and see absolutely no change whatsoever. I tried a variety of web pages and the brightness remains constant regardless. I always disengage Auto brightness and have mine set pretty high at 90.

i've got the same issue. made a thread on XDA.

my DNA did the same thing, and it's most noticable on low brightness.

here's the thing..i just rooted, and i found something in titaniumbackup called "Content Adaptive Backlight Settings 1.0"

i can't figure out howto open it..but when i froze it, and uninstalled it, it still happened. :(

*edit* just opened it with quickshortcutmaker and unchekced the option for it....but it STILL does it. ugh!

Tried doing a factory reset. But I'm thinking this is just a flaw in the phone that only a few of us will notice. Still, I've owned quite a few Android phones and this is the first time I've seen something like this. Ill be exchanging it today so hopefully that will work out.

My G2 gets extremely hot and has pretty poor battery life, so maybe its just a lenon.

Yeah, it is still a huge pain in the *** in sense kernels, but I guess many people don't notice it.

it's not a flaw.. it's that dynamic contrast something or other. it's meant to do that.. it's just annoying lol my dna did it too

eh it does it above 15, it's just not as noticeable. I'm always at 40 for the most part and I even see it flipping through home screens.

basically it's this.. the more white on the screen the brighter it is. the less white, the dimmer it gets. I go from my home screen with my calendar which is all white to my main screen which has no white because it's my black clock widget, and my home screen dims down when I switch to it. it's so weird.

Replacement phone has the same issue so this is clearly a hardware flaw.

However, the new phone doesn't get anywhere near as hot as the old one, so I may keep it anyway. Its such a great phone otherwise...well, the greasy back and on-screen buttons suck too, LOL.

lol dude, it's not a hardware flaw. this is a software issue. i'm telling you, it's def that content adaptive brightness.

i just noticed it on my 52 inch sony HDTV last night too. when watching a blu ray, it has the black bars around it...the black bars would get brighter/dimmer based on what was going on in the actual picture. i never noticed it until someone on XDA pointed it out. apparently all new screens do it. my DNA did it, too.

Many devices only use it extensively in media applications. It looks like it is overdone in the kernels of some phones.
