With Android 4.1.2, the DROID Bionic is now able to see emoji natively. However, users are cannot input emoji on their own.

Note, method to install/activate emoji input on other Android 4.1 devices -

  1. Go into Settings
  2. Tap Language & input
  3. Tap on Android keyboard settings
  4. Tap on Add-on dictionaries
  5. Tap on Emoji for English words
  6. Tap on Install

When you type certain keywords, a corresponding emoji icon is supposed to appear. On the DROID Bionic, this does not occur.

After installing, the "Emoji for English words" option may disappear. If you exit and return to the dictionaries menu, the "Emoji for English words" option may again appear to be installed.

I believe this also affects the DROID RAZR and DROID 4.

I have a Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx (Original, not HD) running 4.1.2 (not rooted) and can confirm that this problem does exist in RAZRs, or at least in RAZR Maxxes. It is extremely annoying, as I have tried to install it multiple times, and cannot do so.

After using the Go SMS Pro text application for a while, I got used to using the emoji icons. Especially when I texted my wife on her iPhone. But I had issues with the app not receiving group messages and taking too much battery, so I uninstalled it and noticed most emoji my wife would send still show up on my base text app. I just stumbled up on the "Emoji for English Words" add-in like you mentioned and had the same issue with my Droid Bionic.

Hope they fix it soon, but thanks for the explanation. Otherwise I'd be messing with it all day.

I doubt they'll fix it. I believe it's an issue on all TI OMAP Motorola 4.1.2 devices - and we're not supposed to be getting any more updates unless they're security issues.

i don't have android keyboard, i just have xperia, chinese and japanese keyboard. how to install emoji? i'm using xperia sl

I have a droid razr maxx and my keyboard has that problem. That's a pain that that they won't update. Its not fair that everyone else gets emojis. I'm so jealous!

try out the google keyboard, it seems to be working just fine on my bionic, all emoji show up just like they should.

just be sure to install the emoji dictionary like before. but so far doesn't get "lost"

Can you type out Emoji? I have no problems viewing Emoji.

well, it's working great on my bionic, i type airplane and i get a little plane emoji in the work prediction area, at least it works in verizon messanges and gmail. however, i can't get it to work at all on my dna. there has got to be some settings somewhere that are different but i haven't found them yet. will keep looking. i do know that the arrows for moving the cursor have to be disabled before the emoji will work. but i'm not sure what else.

another update. it's wierd but on the dna when nothing would work, i decided to delete the google keyboard and reinstall. i opened the app drawer and yes, there was an app icon for the keyboard in there, but when i went to longpress, i goofed and launched the "app", the startup for google keyboard. the first thing it wants you to do is select a default keyboard (which i had done in settings) but i clicked it anyway and lo and behold the htc keyboard was checked. i checked google and then finished and exited, never going into settings. opened my texting app and viola! success. emoji works. seems like one needs to launch that little "app". on my bionic i had "launched it from the notifications when i downloaded the keyboard. the whole thing seems wierd, but, hey whatever works, right.....

Sweet. I can type 4.1.2 emojis now via Google Keyboard. Thanks for the tip.
