Bug - phone keeps auto-pressing back and menu buttons

Hi all, I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, fully updated, and not damaged in any way.

I started having this bug about a month ago, every once in a while my phone does not allow me to press the back or menu buttons at all. My home button works, but these back and menu buttons become completely unresponsive (not even haptic feedback).

Then it got worse. In addition to being periodically unresponsive, my phone will now auto-press the back and menu buttons. It gets REAL bad, the phone vibrates via haptic feedback and now when it happens, the phone buzzes like crazy as the self-pressing back/menu buttons cause my apps to exit out, enter settings, and go google searches. I literally cannot do anything when this happens because it is completely unprovoked and won't stop for an hour.

Welcome to Android Central! I assume you've already tried a reboot, right? Try wiping the system cache partition, which can be a helpful general troubleshooting step that doesn't erase any personal data: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-5744

If that doesn't help, then try booting into Safe Mode, which temporarily disables all 3rd party apps. https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-11724

If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, then something you installed is causing the problem. You may have to uninstall apps one by one until the problem disappears. If the problem persists in Safe Mode, then it's more likely to be a hardware or firmware problem.

Thanks for the help! Wiping the system cache partition did not resolve the issue. I performed a software update which did not resolve the issue. I then logged into Safe Mode and the problem persists in Safe Mode.

I then did a complete factory reset on my phone and the problem persists!!!

Does this mean that the problem are defective menu/back softkey buttons? I bought this phone from ebay and it did not appear to be damaged. My phone is almost a year old and I haven't damaged it.

Hi i got the same problem with my s6 too. I'm waiting for the saleperson at the store who sold me the phone to flash another rom to it.
How is your phone now? Does the problem appear again?

It sounds more like a hardware problem to me. (Bringing a hot phone into a cold air-conditioned room can cause internal condensation, which is the same as water damage.)

Re: Bug - phone keeps auto-pressing back and menu buttons

This has happened with me, a couple years ago my 'HTC Wildfire S' used to behave like this.. The reason was the back and menu buttons had stuck (someone might have pressed them so hard that they got stuck),
The only solution was to open up the body of the device and make it correct by removing that extra tension....
If your mobile is in warranty then you should consider this option, because this is not a Software bug for sure, it is due to some hardware problem!!!
