I'm considering buying a U11. From what I've read the U11 looks like a decent phone as shipped with Nougat but I have some concerns about particularly battery life suffering if this is updated to Oreo. I have a friend whose HTC 10 suffered with this problem after an Oreo update, and I've read reports of the same issue affecting at least some U11 phones.
Excuse the basic question but if I buy a U11 phone with Nougat installed will I be forced to update to Oreo at some point, or can I choose not to?
(If it matters, the phone would be unlocked and used in the UK on the 3 network.)

No, you do not have to accept a system update.
