Pondering...

Current Samsung models with Android and security upgrades is one or two years less than iPhone.

So guesstimate Samsung models since 2020 ... Galaxy Ultra 23 would probably be updated til almost 2030?

Wwyd?

The S23 series should get OS updates until 2027 and Security patches until 2028. I always buy my phones outright, and I've never had a pay monthly contract for service.

That's what I've done for the past 13 years. I haven't had a contract since the one that expired in 2010.

Personally, I like to buy the device sort of outright... Out right in the sense that I don't get my device financed through or locked to a carrier. I buy either from Samsung, Amazon or Ebay generally. I would love to buy my device without financing, but I don't have hundreds of dollars. It however is usually cheaper anyway to go through something other than your carrier for financing. With my paypal account, which is what I used for my last device from Ebay, pretty sure it was under 30 dollars a month.

According to this online article, 4 years of major OS updates plus 5 years of security updates, that would add up to 9 years, yes?

Thanks everyone for clearing that up.

So currently how does Samsung compare to its Apple counterpart in terms of keeping a OS/security updated device? Still a big difference or slight one?

I can't be entirely sure, but I know Apple updates their devices for a much longer period of time. That's one bonus about iPhones. My father in law has the iPhone 8 and is still getting updates I believe, which honestly, is how it should be with Android too IMO.
