They wouldn't let me do it for some reason. He said because I bought it unactivated or something. Again not a huge deal as I shop at best buy all the time , still would of been nice , wish they let you apply gift cards to your best buy credit card though.

I'd go back and ask for it because you get the gift card if you buy it full price.

Went back to my BB. Told them I wanted to buy the phone outright. Girl went to go check with her manager and was told they wouldn't sell me the phone outright without activating it in the store. I asked her why, she told me that's how they make money. I told her I know of numerous other people who were able to buy their phone from BB outright from other BB and were not required activate. She said that shouldn't be true that it's company policy to activate the phone right there in store.
I said, that doesn't sound right and left. I didn't think it was worth getting the manager over and arguing with him/her because chances are they would have done whatever was in their power to shoot down the GC (I had already requested Sprint price match). I guess my next step is to try a different BB and give it another go. What a pain.

It boggles my mind how service varies by location

Unfortunately not, the gift card does not get issued until your payment has been taken and approved. I tried this myself

I went into my local BB, (Deptford, NJ) was told by the rep I had to either lease the phone or do easy pay to get the $100 GC. Made no sense to me. Maybe I'll try a different BB.

Update:
I just received a text from Sprint that since I bought a discounted device on the Sprint Family Share Pack, I will be charged $40 a month for a line access charge. It had been $15 on this line with my old S4. At the point of sale, I asked the Best Buy rep whether there would be any change to my plan, and although I was dubious, I was specifically told there wouldn't be. The higher line access charge isn't surprising me at all. It seemed strange that I could buy the device from BB at $199 but the monthly payments when buying from Sprint would have been $25. So either way, I'm still paying the extra $25 per month.
If the $100 gift card hadn't offset the $199 I'd probably be pretty pissed off right now. But the $99 difference seems like a small price to pay to NOT deal with my local Sprint stores. I had gone to three without getting a device before landing at BB (stay out of the Central Ave., Yonkers, NY store by the Kohl's - anything other that repairs is a nightmare there).
So update...my preorder is nowhere to be found and they can't give me an eta. The point of a preorder is being missed here. I'm considering canceling and forgo the $100 if I can find black leather at att.
