By time the EVO comes out......

Uhm, when I listen to internet radio, and a text message comes in, the only "interruption" is the text message sound that I hear when the message comes in, it doesn't interrupt the radio. Also, you can listen to the radio while Sprint Navigation is running. You can also text people while you talk on the phone with someone else, you just can't surf the internet while you talk on the phone.

So, that limitation really doesn't bother me all that much.

Also, while 4G is exciting, and it will be fun to have, I really am looking to the speed and the size of the screen of the phone. 4G will just be some candy that I am going to get later on down the line.

FYI: AT&T customers ONLY get this feature in 3G areas.

texts wont interrupt it no but email or MMS (which use the data connecton) do. Basically if something happens that needs to use the data plan it interrupts (ie downloading additional GPS data, surfing the web, etc.)

But I also don't get the big deal. It's a nice feature but hardly necessary. I've had an iPhone since last summer and have never used voice and data together on that nor on any of my other phones (Bold, 8900, Storm2) which have the ability through WiFi.

So wait, you guys are saying texts don't interrupt a data connection? Because texts sure as heck interrupt a data connection on my Sprint Touch Pro 2. And I can't see why they wouldn't, since text messages are using the voice network, which is why you can do it while on the phone but you can't use data while on the phone. And internet radio is using an active data connection, so why wouldn't texts interrupt it?

texts do not interfere with data going all the way back to my Rumor.
But... I thought it was pretty much confirmed the Evo won't do simultaneous data voice even in a 4G area.

And the thing about 4G and Palm is still my point. How would it save Palm. 4G is in 25 markets. It sounds good but is useless for most people, they just don't know it.

Completely wrong. With 4G it will turn the call into VOIP so you can use data while on the phone. You must be in a 4G area though. Personally, I have never had the need to use it, I just tell the person I will call them right back, never had an issue. Oh, and there are a LOT more than 25 markets with 4G, they just have not been activated yet. You'll see come June ;).

was that confirmed from Sprint? Last I read it wasn't an official feature.

but sprint does not use voip, all voice on sprint goes over the 1x connection (along w/ text).

Been on Sprint forever and I always been able to talk and text ect. Only thing I can't do is surf the web.

Right, you can talk and text at the same time but not surf the web while doing either. And streaming radio is the same as surfing the web, so I don't know how they're doing it.

You certainly can't do it on my Touch Pro 2.

I currently have the Palm Pre. I send texts while on a call all the time.

Maybe browsing the web demands too much data and thats why it isn't possible (blind guess lol).

It's because CDMA simply doesn't permit it.

Oh yeah, that's right, I knew it was either CDMA or the carriers, not the phone.

And that's what a lot of people forget. The EVO will be on Sprint! Not the best service in the world. On top of that 4g isn't everywhere. It will only benfit those in the select cities. That's why I don't get why everyone is excited about this phone. Its main feature isn't available to everyone.

No carrier is perfect everywhere, you can't generalize service. Sprint has fantastic coverage where I live, better than AT&T and T-Mobile and almost as good as Verizon. WiMAX is live in 27 Sprint markets and Sprint claims they'll quadruple coverage by the end of the year. But even if you don't live in a WiMAX area, the EVO still mates the fastest CPU and best OS out there with a massive screen, excellent camera, and HDMI out.

I don't really get much of the simultaneous voice/data arguments. What is that truly useful for? When you are doing things like that, you would most likely be in an area of wifi.
Google navigation cache's the entire route before guiding you, so you still get voice guided directions, no map.... but do you really want to be talking, looking at a map and driving?

I don't think it's all that important, but I do see the appeal. You could be on the phone and look something up online.

Not yet. The first generation of 4G phones (WiMAX and LTE) will use 4G only for data when available, but CDMA/GSM for voice. You won't see voice going over WiMAX and LTE until the 4G networks are built out enough. I was at a Verizon event a few months ago and they said they expect voice to be on CDMA until their LTE network is as built out as their EVDO network is now. Sprint probably has a similar game plan for WiMAX.

It's because CDMA simply doesn't permit it.

CDMA EVDO Rev. A doesn't allow simultaneous voice and data. An upgrade could allow it, but with 4G looming it's not worth the time or money to Verizon or Sprint to do it.

I'll double what other people have said re: palm pre. I stream radio A LOT on my pre...and if i get a txt, there is a brief interruption for the sound of the text. In fact, if the phone is on vibrate, i get NO interruption in my stream.

I understand the thinking that one is data and the other over voice so how do they both work at the same time?....tbo, I have no flippin' clue...but it works.

There's something "weird" about text messages. I don't get all the technical wiz but from my understanding it's not really data OR voice.
Somebody wanna step up and explain in simple English?

It comes in over the voice network. Usually, you'll see during the text messages the data drops down to 1x briefly.
