Cached data question

I was wondering if anybody could shed a little light on how cached data worked, in particular when you clear it.

I generally clear the cache every couple days because it seems to help with battery performance.

It used to be, that when I clear the cache, it goes down to 2.45mb.

After the kit-kat update, it would only go down to 5.14mb.

Now it seems to be creeping up to a little over 6mb.

Sometimes, when I clear it, I have to do it a couple times before it goes down to the low 5s, which is the lowest I can get it to go since the kit-kat update.

Also, sometimes I have to reboot to get it to go down, as if something gets stuck from time to time.

I've done that once about a month ago. It still didn't bring it down to zero, although I'm not sure if it's supposed to.

In fact, once I did the partition wipe, I went right to storage in settings, and it didn't appear to have down at all.

I then cleared it from there, and it went down further than it had in a while, but not below 5mb

I think there is a difference between clearing cached data from storage and from recovery. Clearing from recovery clears the /cache partition, which is where Dalvik cache is stored for system files. Clearing for settings / storage clears cached data in the /data partition, where user installed apps store their cache.

I could be wrong about that, though...

In a perfect world, of course, cache is a good thing. Clearing cached data prevents apps from needing to recreate the cache. It's useful if the phone is acting up, of course.

Is there any empirical evidence that a lower cache size results in better battery life? If not, does someone have an explanation as to why it might be true?

I don't have emperical evidence, but if the cached data gets corrupted, the OS spends more computing cycles to try to figure it out, which leads to more CPU use and thus lower battery life.
