Calendar issue: Cannot delete single events from a recurring sequence

I cannot delete a single instance of a recurring meeting, because after the delete (which works fine) the event seems to come back. This also happens if I make edits in a recurring event, using the "only this event" option. If I delete the single event in the google calendar it works fine, but on my phone the event is again "undeleted."

This is very frustrating. Samsung advised be to do a hard reboot, which I did, but it did not fix the question.
