calendar notification on home screen

How does the Pixel handle calendar reminders above the date/weather on the homescreen? I did a couple of trials and it looks so far like only events in Gmail accounts are populated there. A Hotmail event i created did not. Am I missing a setting or is that the default? When I'm back at work it would be nice to get the reminders on the homescreen for my Exchange account.
