I was asked about this a while ago. Cant find the post. So here it is. If you are currently having problems with your call quality. Try this...

*22899

This will update your phone to the NEAREST set of towers. It fixed the bad call quality on my Fascinate when I had it. No more side tone or anything.

Thank you. I hope backround noise on mine will not be so sensitive. It picks up everything when I talk.

WOW, WOW, WOW! One more time WOW! I called the 2 people I always call and they said it sounds so much better. Backround noise has been toned down significantly. Cant believe this as I was ready to go tomorrow morning to replace it with the DX seriously. Thank you man for the info. You made my day.

Verizon tech believe it or not. That and a little digging on my part. Probably will not work for everyone because different thing will cause call quality issues. If you start getting the side tone again just do that again.

But it it def worth a shot.

And you are welcome sir. Glad that helped someone.

From what I've read, dialing *22899 is the same thing as dialing *228 and choosing option 1 (or 2), whatever the full system setup thing is that you do when setting up a new phone. It just automatically chooses whichever option and avoids the prompts to do so.

But I'd love to hear from others with the sidetone issue if this makes any difference. When I was on the phone with tech support, they had me do the *228 and choose option 1 or 2, and it didn't do anything for me - with regards to signal strength or sidetone or anything.

What is it you guys mean by side tone? Is it that weird echo-ish background noise? I can say after doing this the call quality in my house is noticeably improved and the strange background noise I was experiencing is gone.

You bet that is what we are talking about by side tone. I think...lol. Glad it helped you.

Noticed this today, it depends on how close your face is to the phone speaker...i'm trying the update *228, 1 first.

That is also true to an extent. I noticed it on my Fascinate when I had it all up on my face I got side tone. But when I took it away from my mouth a bit it cleared a little. Also has something to do with how loud you talk.

I think if Samsung just adjusts mic sensitivity a little bit, it might help the issue.

Also the setting of "system volume" under settings/sound .. if it is the whole way up it 'seems' you get more sidetone then when it is lowered.

Maybe a coincidence..don't know until others try it.

For the love of god why did no one think to put a mic sensitivity adjustment on the phone? Are they just (obviously wrongly) sold on automatic gain control? It kills me that Google (and to an extent the hardware MFRs) is content to make an app-running machine that is kind of a phone (but not a very good one) instead of making a good phone that also runs apps. I have been on Android for 2 weeks now and am firmly disappointed with the hype. I can do a voice search and the phone understands me no matter what i say or how loud i say it, but if i want to make a simple f****** phone call the thing just breaks down and fails.

Re: Call Quality issues

*22899 didn't work for me at all. I have so much sidetone, it's like I'm shouting static into my own ear. Just replaced the phone with the same model, and still the same issue. Any other suggestions?

Currently evaluating 6 Fascinates for return to Verizon - if there is no correction for this issue with call quality, the company I work for will return them for Droid incredibles or Driod X's...

@JaeKar99....I am curious are all 6 equally poor with call quality??
I made a couple calls w/ the Fascinate this morning and I don't think the call quality is horrible. I do think the X is landline quality , but the X has some issues of its own right now.

You trade some issues for others..But IMO there is not a cell phone on the market today, that doesn't have issues. Not saying its right, just a fact.

Sent out a survey this morning to evaluate how many of the 6 that have call issues. I know that I have some mild issues with my phone. Two others reporting fair to poor quality.

I am comfortable with my device... However, it is a distraction more than anything else for owner of the company. He is the one person I have to keep happy... Not real happy with Verizon sales rep right now (sold us Storm I without adequate supports) and it would not take much for him to pull the plug and send the whole lot back.

Amen to that. It's as if you have to decide on a phone by just picking the feature you prefer the most and suffer through all the other **** that's broken about the thing.

Preaching to the choir. ;)

Unfortuately I have been assigned the task of admistering 25+ cell phones for a company that has 10+ many makes and models with only 6 being smart phones.. Was down the road with the Blackberry Storm I for 18 months and some major issues there.

I like my Fascinate. I would be sad to let it go due to another person's frustration. :(
