Last night my wife was involved in a bike riding accident and I needed to call 911. I was in a panic so I really am unsure what was happening but here is what I recall:

When I called 911 I received a busy signal
I received a message on my phone asking me if I wanted it to go into Call Back Only Mode.

I tried several times with the same results.

I was able to call my father who called 911 on my behalf and got help.

About 15 minutes later I was able to contact 911.

Has anyone ever experienced this, and what can I do to prevent this in the future.

By the way my wife is okay and only suffered some fractures to her face. Thank GOD she was wearing a bike helmet which broke into 3 pieces as a result of the accident. Without the helmet I may have been planning her funeral now.

I'm glad she's alright. I can't stress how important it is to wear a helmet. I see so many idiots saying how it "ruins" their look, or how they're tired of the government telling them what to do.
Guess it thins out the herd, though.

I just got off the line with verizon support. They show my calls as successfull, but all of my attempts but the last one failed from my point of view.

They are going to investigate and see if there was something wrong with the tower(s).

I hope you keep following up with them on this. After 09/2011, I would think that they would have this all worked out. 911 HAS to work every time, no exceptions.

After the derecho here in the DC area, there were 911 centers that were down.

Two weeks ago we were in Seattle for work and brought our daughter. She stayed with my wfies cousin. Short of the long my daughter had to use her MAXX to dial 911 because the cousin fainted. She made the call with out a problem. So yeah it may have been a tower issue.

The experience my wife had with 911 was the person answering was in KENTUCKY? We live in Cincinnati,OH. I have noticed the weather widget often shows Kentucy locations. I plan to call VZ to see what they can do. BTW there are cell towers within 2-3 miles of our house

It all depends on where the call gets routed. That's why it's horrible to call 911 from a cell phone unless you absolutely have to

It might have been a one time only thing. Maybe the towers near you were congested so the call got routed to the Kentucky side
