Camera App keeps crashing.....

I wonder how many more had this defect. Was yours Clearly White? My original one was, but the replacement is Just Black. Was your defective one XL, like mine?

Yes mine was clearly White and replacement is also whilte. Google support said I was the first one reporting with this issue so don't know if can take their word but I told them I already know at least one more person with same issue.

Yep - exact same issue here. The issue is with any 3rd party app that uses the camera (snapchat, qr code scanner, twitter, etc). When a 3rd party app calls the camera, it crashes it and only a reboot makes the proper camera functional again. Factory reset/safe mode doesn't help. A coworker and I got our 3 XL(just black, 64gb) at the same time from the same Verizon launch batch. His works normally, mine does not.

You have to do a replacement, I got a replacement device from Google store and all good now. So time for RMA, good luck.

Thanks, but I just went to the verizon store and got it swapped on the spot. If within the 30-day purchase window, it makes it much easier to get a new one without having to do annoying cross-shipments

Ugh I am having the same issue. It definitely only started today as I was able to take photos from Instagram yesterday but not anymore. What a pain. Looking at Google forum posts, some support reps are refusing to RMA affected devices.

Any idea why they claim they are refusing RMA?

Apparently because it's a software issue and not a hardware, so it can be fixed with an update. Others were hoping it'd be fixed with the November update but this doesn't seem to be the case.

I don't use the camera much from other apps so I might sit on this for another few weeks and see what happens. It'd be infuriating if I was a heavy Snapchat user or similar. For now, I've disabled camera access from third party apps, though it's worth noting is also happens with Playground and Photo Sphere.

The one issue I've been seeing is that I when I press to view the photo I just took, it would instantly close and go back to the camera app.

I had this problem the first 3 days I had the phone...haven't had it since

I would fight it from the perspective that if it was software it should be affecting all phones.

Nice to see this issue get more exposure - there's been plenty of articles posted on tech news websites in the last 24hrs. More and more users are posting in the Google forums. Some have been successful with getting an RMA with the issue not reoccurring on the new device, while some users are being denied and told to wait for a software fix.

Luckily for me I purchased from a retailer so I'm just waiting for them to restock my exact model so we can do a swap. One store tried to get me to call Google first but no way am I spending 3 hours on the phone with them to go through useless troubleshooting just to have them deny me. I've already tried safe mode and a factory reset myself.

EDIT: Google provided a statement to 9to5Google.

"Google has sent a response to our request for comment on this issue. The company says that this is a known issue and that an update will roll out to fix the problem in the coming weeks. The company has not commented on the refusal to replace affected units, but we’ve reached out for further clarification.

We’ve seen reports from a small group of customers who have encountered a bug when using Pixel Camera from within third-party apps. A fix will be rolling out in the coming weeks. In the meantime, for people affected, you can use Pixel Camera without limitations and share images to third-party apps."
