Camera exposure question

I just got the G6 and I noticed something right away that I can't explain.

In previous phones, using certain camera apps, you can tap for focus and then drag an exposure meter around to pick which part of the image to expose for. I still see this option in the apps on this phone but they don't have any effect. Does anyone understand why this is happening? Has something changed in Oreo to cause this level of setting exposure to have been disabled?

I've now tested every major camera app in Play and none of the ones with manual exposure metering rings for selecting exposure areas in your frame work. Does Android Oreo not support this feature? Is it Camera 2 API that blocks this?

Nope, it should work. However, I don't have a G6 to test, so the issue might be with the G6's particular implementation.

Does it work if you use the stock camera? Are you using a second lens (second lens options ARE restricted in Android overall)?

No. Stock camera suffers from the same problem. Can't get an answer from LG, Android, LG Canada (I'm in Canada) or anyone else about this. Really annoying. I know I can just adjust the exposure manually, but that feature is really useful and even worked on my crappy BLU Life One X before.

OK, if it doesn't work in the stock camera then it's definitely a problem with the phone. Whether is with every G6 out there or not, I couldn't tell. Do you have access to another one or maybe a carrier store nearby where you can try it out? If it's just your phone, a factory reset might help or you might need to get a replacement unit.

My wife and I both have it, got them at the same time. Both from Rogers. They're LG H873s, if it matters.

If they're carrier branded and they both have the same issue it might be a bug in the carrier OS then. If you could see another G6 from another carrier or I'll try to find someone who can chime in with one. I assume your wife's is exhibiting the same issue?

Yes, both phones are doing this. I don't have access to another one at all. I tried posting a question in the LG G6 section at XDA and got no replies. If you could find someone to get an answer from that would be super helpful. I found it so weird that this couldn't be done. The thing is, I'm a photographer and exposure compensation isn't the same exactly as picking an exposure in your frame. I shouldn't have to lower the exposure in place of picking a spot to expose properly, y'know?

I just tried this on my V20 with no success, so it may just be an LG thing. In auto mode, I could press and hold to lock the exposure, and in manual mode I had to tap the exposure compensation button to manually change relative exposure values.

Thanks. At least that gives us more info to go on. Would be great to get a poll of several LG owners to see if this is a thing throughout the latest LGs. All I cant think is that when manual control wasn't as readily available before Camera 2.0 api, that sliding exposure ring helped emulate manual control. They probably thought it would overcomplicate getting good exposure for the average user. I don't know, just a guess.
