Have you had the Froyo camera fail issue right after updating?

My unrooted Fascinate is running the Froyo update and since then the camera has not worked at all. The "Please wait..." message appears for a few minutes and then the camera crashes.

I've tried updating the firmware through Launcher Pro by adding the shortcut activity to the desktop and that had no results.

Are there any other options to try WITHOUT resetting my phone or getting a new one...??

Thanks.

Did you try to power it off, pull the battery, put it back in and power it up?

Andrynalyne posted a fix back in Feb. when the root crowd got froyo.

Its not terribly common, but there have been some cases where upon installing froyo and updating the camera, the firmware flash has messed up and broken the camera. Make no mistake, this is not a software issue. Its a camera firmware issue and the only way to fix it is to reflash the firmware.

Now, the camera software offers once. After that, if it fails, it isn't going to prompt again.

To get around this:

1. Download Launcher Pro from the market. Any cut and ADW will likely work too.
2. make a new shortcut, to an activity.
3. Scroll to Camera Firmware, and choose the second option (user)
4. Click ok. There is now a shortcut on your homescreen. Choose the third option, Phone to CAM FW Write. Put your phone down and do not touch it until it is done.

Hope this helps.

Thanks but ya I tried that with Launcher Pro, ADW, and even just in TouchWiz...it said that it updated the camera's firmware successfully but it never seemed to fix the camera's crashing issue unfortunately.

Both Fascinates in the household have the same camera failure issue and that fix that Adrynalyne had posted didnt do the trick. :-\

Bummer. First though is you could flash back to DI01, and then re-up to ED01 and try again.

My other thought is that the camera firmware shows up as an app in titanium backup, so maybe you can uninstall it and then redownload the firmware? I'll try it with my good firmware and see what I get out of it.

Update: Interestingly enough, I removed the firmware, the camera still runs like a top, but the firmware isn't showing. I guess I'll just have to go back to "flash DI01 and re-up"

I tried the LP method with no luck. I finally gave in and did the factory reset and everything cleared up. It was easy, my first time ever doing it. Just back up all of your apps. Your contacts are backed up in your google account, and verizon if you use backup assistant. The phone works perfectly now, no issues. It is better than ever.

I used appMonster to backup my apps. contacts are backed up in your google account.
Go to settings - Privacy - Factory Data reset.

For those with camera issues, this is what I got from Verizon Tech. support.

Thank you for contacting our Verizon Wireless website. We apologize you are not able to use the camera on the Samsung Fascinate since installing a recent update. We are happy to assist you with troubleshooting the Samsung Fascinate.

Based on the information provided, the Samsung Fascinate has installed the Android Operating System (OS) 2.2 update and now the camera no longer works. The recent update included an update for the camera which will improve the functionality of the camera. We regret there is not a separate update available for the camera.

We suggest completing a soft reset by powering off/on the Samsung Fascinate to ensure the application is working properly. The behavior you have described may also be caused by software on the Samsung Fascinate becoming corrupt. In most cases software related issues can be resolved by performing a soft or if necessary, a hard reset. We have provided steps to hard reset the Samsung Fascinate due to the camera not working.

Soft reset:
Soft Reset - Samsung Fascinate SCH-I500

Test the Samsung Fascinate and if the issue still persists, follow the instructions below to perform a hard reset:

Please note the following:
- A hard reset will erase everything on the Samsung Fascinate, so don't perform a hard reset unless your data is backed up, or you are willing to lose all data
- Also, you may need to re-enter third-party software registration codes when you restore your data later, so keep these handy or request them from the third-party software vendor before proceeding
- Pictures and purchased applications are saved to the memory card and Contacts are typically saved to the Gmail server. Please login to http://www.gmail.com from a computer to ensure the Contacts and Calendar information are saved before resetting the device

Hard reset:

Once the steps above have completed, the Samsung Fascinate will be able to use the camera feature.

Our records also indicate that you may benefit from a free update of your wireless phone’s roaming software. As Verizon Wireless continues to expand our network, it is important to update your software to receive optimal coverage when traveling. We recommend that you perform this update at least every 30 days or before leaving for a trip, as this will give you the ability to pick up newly acquired service areas while roaming. To update your phone, please follow the instructions provided at the link below:

Updating the Preferred Roaming List (PRL)

I've also been waiting to see if there was another fix besides the hard reset. Guess not... Will try that tonight.

I went ahead and backed everything up and restored the phone. Although I was pleasantly surprised the phone restored to Froyo...

It took an evening to reinstall everything and get my settings back up but the phone has never been better. It runs great and everything so far works. The voice search issues I've been having were also fixed. I did find a setting regarding the wifi and turning it off when the phone goes into lock - I'm not 100% sure if that works but should hopefully help with the lousy battery life.

Thanks

After backing up data, apps and contacts I decided to do a hard restart to try and fix the camera...instead of getting the "please wait..." message I get "warning:camera failed" after the restart. Is there anymore fixes that I could try? I really don't want to get another phone! Thanks.

I suggest checking this thread out first: http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...-please-read-post-1-before-posting-forum.html

Also review other resourceful threads within this section: http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/

Just read up on the process of things and get a good understanding, it's pretty simple once you get familiar with it :)

just to add on, I would say go to stock and then do the OTA update again. You do not seem to want to do anything other than get the camera working and it could have just been a bad update.
