Camera: G4 vs. iPhone 6

Re: The Camera.....

I actually did try an iPhone 6 for some time, but I can't share the photos because I don't have one.

The iPhone 6 actually has a legitimately impressive camera. It isn't as technologically advanced as the G4, but the camera app is very easy to use, is quick and photos look great on it. It was pretty hard to beat until we get phones like the Galaxy S6 and LG G4.

After playing with those 2, I think we've got some serious contenders. The S6 and G4 have stepped up the camera game with more advanced tech, better photos than before and an even more simplified experience. In this comparison, even though the S6 came out on top, the samples looked largely similar to me, minus some difference in color temperature and other stuff.

Re: The Camera.....

Seems to me that the manual mode on the G4 sounds like the way to go but who does that with a cell phone. However I would bet that the G4, in video mode, does not do what the iPhone does to the video where it does that Parallax thing where everything around the main focus point gets all tripy and makes me bothered and not pay attention to the video.

I don't agree with that link's scoring. G4 is better than both S6 and iPhone in low light. Look at the portrait no flash low light picture. All the objects and background behind her look better. A lot more detail. Less grainy. Difference is night and day.

Re: The Camera.....

In comparing the two phones, I'd say the iPhone 6 Plus holds its own. I didn't realize it until this thread popped up.

There is a wider field of view on the LG G4, which I like. The iPhone's camera has never been a wide camera, but quality wise, I'd say they are both about the same IMO. Fully zoomed in, the iPhone actually takes a better picture than the G4... It's surprising because I loved the photos the G4 took, so I'm shocked that the iPhone's holding it's own, even pulling away when zoomed in.

I would argue that your focus point was in a different spot for the LG, scotty. Based on how the picture was centered, I would say your focus point was behind the safety vest for the LG, and on the vest for the iPhone.

I honestly noticed in the main G4 photos thread a decent amount of the auto pics either have noise or oversaturated colors. However, in manual mode some look good enough to frame and hang up. The thing I like about my iPhone 6 over my Android phone (not a G4) is that it takes decent pics no matter the lighting in auto.

I wonder if the iPhone has been as good when it first launched, or did updates to the software after customers had been using it for a while help improve it over time. I would bet most of any G4 camera shortcomings are more software related, and may be fixed with updates, hopefully.

Apple is really good at camera software. I don't remember noticing any big changes in the camera with OS updates with the iPhone 6 in particular. In the past with other iPhones updates have corrected software camera issues, but they did a good job with the 6/6 Plus in particular. That definitely can't be said with the rest of iOS 8 of course. One thing I really wish is they'd let users pic the aspect ratio. I understand from a sharing/standards pov why they shoot in 4x3, but it seems like so much wasted space on the actual phone display. I prefer shooting in 16x9 and cropping after the fact.

Sounds like Apple has a good team developing their camera software, better than most other manufacturers. The sensor in the G4 is a Sony piece, and they're known for making some of the best, and the same one as in the Samsung G6 (don't know about the iPhone). The results are two really good phone cameras, though slightly different results.

They use Sony sensors as well. I'm interested to see what they do with the 6s. I think those are that's when they usually do the most with camera updates. I know megapixels aren't everything, but zooming on an iPhone is not good at all. A bump in megapixels should help with that. Cropping works pretty well.

Exactly, the only reason to bump up a camera phone's MP more than it is is for more crop factor, i.e. zoom, since they have a fixed lens.
