Camera how good is it.....really?

His picture matches exactly with most reviews that say it struggles in well lit outdoor shots. Virtually every comparison I've seen shows the One with poor outdoor daylight shots.

That is simply NOT true.

You obviously do not own the device. The daylight shots are fantastic. What reviewers are saying is that it has less detail because of the lack of the megapixel count. The quality is very, very good.

The picture that I addressed looks washed out, which exactly ZERO of my daylight shots look like; it looks dry, underlit, and just horrible.

Jerry Hildenbrand posted some shots here that will obviously prove you wrong.

My question to you: why are you continously posting so many negative things about this camera when you do not own the device? In addition to misintepreting why reviews are saying?

I own 2 Ones so please don't make false accusations and ruin an otherwise scholarly discussion. I have directly quoted from AC review and others. Feel free to interpret them as you wish.

Where are the pictures you have posted from your HTC One showing what you have said on this thread? I would expect such a loud voice to show some kind of example of such horrible camera quality.

You quoted the review, but you pulled why I call a "Michael Moore." You twisted the truth. The AC review says the quality is lower because of the lack of megapixels, not because the image quality is bad.

Again, Jerry Hildenbrand showed us several shots here that looked great. The one washed out picture that we saw here was one that most agreed had to have a defective unit, or grease on the lens.

I would like to see your examples of that bad quality you are getting from your "two Ones."

I am posting my daylight shots here as soon as it turnes to daylight where I am.

Maybe you should read what Jerry actually wrote instead of flaming me. Enjoy your One. It's a great phone or I wouldn't have spent $780 USD for 2 of them.

If I want or need better then I grab my Lumix PaS or pentax 5IIs
There is an ip5, ip4s and sgs4 in the family and unless you are really looking it's hard to tell which took which picture when they are all on my laptop.
They all have slight advantages and disadvantages but unless you always shoot in the same light then you should just learn to adjust the settings to compensate or use some kind of post processing.
Just my 2 cents :-)

It takes some time, effort and trial and error to learn how to get the best results from any camera, phone or DSLR. These reviews where they test 3 or 4 or more cameras are inherently flawed because they don't have time, interest, or skills to learn what the real capabilities of each device is. They basically just go out and take random shots at various locations with the devices set to auto and snap away. Think about how few interesting pictures you see in these reviews. That tells you right away that little thought went into taking the pictures.

Better to go to Flickr and look at the HTC One community. There you will see fantastic shots showing that the one has a capable camera.

I visited the rules and think they are appropriate:

P.U.P.P.A.H
(Be Polite, Understanding, Patient, Professional, Attentive and Helpful)

?Be polite. We ask that you keep your language clean and polite.
?Be understanding and patient. You may be a power user or developer, but the person you?re talking to on the other end may be a complete newbie. Be patient, and provide all details possible if you?re posting about a problem (descriptive thread title always helps).
?Be a pro. Don?t get into arguments over dumb things. If someone responds in a poor or rude fashion, ignore it. If you notice a pattern of rude or poor behaviour from a particular member, report them to our moderators. If you don?t have anything nice to say, don?t say anything at all. In a nutshell, ?think before you post?.
?Be attentive and helpful. Answer questions in a timely manner when you can, and provide thoughts and suggestions that might lead to the solution of a members? problem.

I am sure these rules will apply to Trolling as well as to singling people out.

Well I took this one in the morning with good light. I think it came out pretty good compared to my other pics taken in bright light. What do you guys think. Could it be normal for this camera to have such a difference in quality between lighting conditions?

Well lit outdoor shots show less detail when zoomed but at full resolution look fine the area I've had the most issue with are harshly lit indoor shots with high contrast. You can manually adjust things to make it look ok but auto mode seems to wash out a lot of details in the bright spots. It's not much worse than my GS2 or my coworkers' Evo LTE or Droid Razr Maxx but I'd imagine the GS4 would do a better job. If it were 6 or 8MP I'd be content.

I think the color representation is excellent but again there is no detail to the leaves on the trees on the left or the right.

I actually love the camera on my One. I only use it for digital images that I want to share. I wouldn't use a phone for printed pics. That just doesn't make sense when you can buy a good camera so cheap now and the quality of a good camera blows all the phones out of the water.

The megapixels are fine. I am happy with my results and have switched to using 4:3 crop for almost everything. That is only 3.1mp, And still, I have to reduce the size to view the shots on my 1920 x 1080 22in monitor.

Why would I want more megapixels? Especially if it meant smaller pixels.

True my ability to severely crop the output is not as good as a 13mp camera, but I usually compose pretty carefully in camera and minor crops are not an issue.

As I said before, I do think they made a mistake making the sensor 16:9 as they could have made a 4:3 sensor using the same size pixesl and same lens at 5.4mp with the same 4.1mp in16:9 format. Why they didn't do this is confusing. Perhaps the supplier specializes in video or something and didn't have the ability to make a 4:3 sensor in that size.

I haven't really used the phone much in bright outdoor light yet - although I will get that chance as I will be in Texas next month. The shots I have taken are fine for a cell phone though. I have expererienced blown highlights and wish the dynamic range were better - although I can't say it is worse on the One than any other cell phone. It should be better given the pixel size. I haven't had the opportunity to really hone an exposure strategy with it yet, that may help. I know just pointing and shooting with a bright sky or other bright area in the frame is not going to produce good results.

This was a bright day - although the subjects are in partial shade. I am happy with this from my cell phone. The colors are good and accurate, it is clear and sharp - even at full resolution.

It's really simple.. If you use this phone as a quick grab and want to take nice pictures that can be shared via mobile/email or like Dropbox.. then the One is perfect.. it was made to be fast and trades MP for quick, low light, all around good performance. If you want to put your phone on a tri-pod and take a very detailed, crop-able, large photos then you need another phone.. or a point and shoot.

For 90% of users the One is the better choice. You are at a party, or with a friend and want that quick pic for a new meme.. you want the ONE... Your pic is only any good if you actually capture it.

Eventually we will get it all .. but right now you have to pick... fast, decent performance in most situations in a manageable size.. or slower, high detail, crop-able images.

I have to admit that i am a specs ***** when it comes to phones.. and i almost passed up the ONE because of the camera.. until i used it and realized that it is exactly what i needed. In the past i have used Lumia 920, 900, Samsung Focus, galaxy S3, S2, HTC HD7, ONE, Iphone 1-5 (minus the 4S).. i must say that the One is probably my second favorite, next to the Lumia 920 as far as the camera goes( The ONE beats the Lumia 920 on a lot of other levels). The Galaxies all took great pics also.. but the shutter speed seemed to be an issues and because i'm a grab and shoot type (playgrounds with kids) I would miss a lot of shots. In the end they are all pretty nice (on the higher end phones anyway) and it comes down to preference.. but i will take the camera speed and "jack of all trades" of the ONE over any other phone right now (add in the awesome looks and other ONE features and I just cant see going with anything else right now.)

Beautiful picture. I clicked on it to see the full-screen version, and it blew me away, how clear it was and how the skin-tones looked! I totally agree with your assessment; it is a phone, and it takes great pictures. If I want better than this, out comes the REAL camera! :)

PS: would you PLEASE put your name or some other identifier in your signature line? You have SO many good posts, but it's hard to say, "I agree with SCjRqrQCnBQ19QoYCtdl, above!" ;)

I feel like the 16:9 is so that it fills the full screen of your phone.. maybe i'm wrong? Is the phone screen 16:9 or 4:3 ? i can never remember.

The screen is 16:9, but having the sensor a different format shouldn't be an issue. The sensor could be a circle or a square and still display on the phone in accordance with what crop mode is being used. I think.

I like the one's camera I don't think its the greatest but it more then suits my needs. I'm a freelance photographer so I can honestly say i have a deep passion for photography. I think HTC moved in the right direction by increasing the sensor size and i hope they continue. I literally look at nearly 300 or more photographs a day and I understand people want to get the best possible images from their camera but we should judge images as a whole overall not pointing out that you cant see details in a pine tree off to the left. That's silly, who really says "that's a nice pic of the kids looks like that had fun but wait that tree in the back left is kinda blurry, whoa I cant count the needles. That's ridiculous your camera sucks." I wish this pixel peeping madness would die.
Its taken too far from smartphone all the way up to $18,000 big boys.

I will say this about the camera on the One is trends to have a contrast issue which effect all photos sometimes it will make the photo look washed out or hazy etc. I suggest running them through auto in snapseed (not auto in the htc gallery app).

In the past if you tend to crop your photos a lot to get the "framing" you want this isn't the camera for you. Some people shot like that and its really not a good choice when using this camera.

But at the end of the day its still just a phone w/ a camera feature. It wont "replace" (be as good I should say) a point & shoot and they won't replace DSLR and they won't replace medium format.
