Camera how good is it.....really?

And the reason I don't have a definitive answer for you is Beebe at best I would have to guess why. So without more information from the reviewer and no information from you I'll give you an example as to why this can and does happen at times.

First off, I think by now you understand that the htc one does not always give you a perfect exposure and dynamic range with even just slight different lighting. Just take a look at the person I was trying to help and regardless of the slight tweeks I gsve him, in just 30 mins or so, his lighting changed from extremely contrasty to s more flat and even lighting. His results were far better under even lighting.

The same could be said about the test from your example. Even if taken at the same time, but on a different day, the results could at times be drastically different. Lighting will produce different results on any camera if it is not dont at exactly the same time and day. So if the reviewer didn't just use his old shots, but retook some pics to make the samples fair and unbiased, then yes, the results will be different.

If this was a result of pre vs post camera update, you will also get a different result.

This is why your sample is bogus. It lacks info add to why the results are different and doesn't prove anything.

Fair enough. Seems I made a gross assumption. Also, I didn't take into account that the EXIF data was embedded in only 1 of the 2, thus I wouldn't have any solid data to support my theory.

I was in error and I stand corrected.

No problem bro. Its all good.

Your welcome. But please again bare in mind that even if I didn't have to wipe the lens 3 ot 4 times, what I did last night was take some night shots in the most worst case scenario. Other then noise levels, the htc one would fair no better due to the extreme lighting conditions.

That seafood joint intentionally uses extremely bright lighting to attract customers away from the other restaurants on this avenue. This Street is also quite dark and is why they do this. Just look at the surrounding joints and you'll notice that they are not even lit up half as bright.

This test was not to show off the low light capabilities of thr S4, but is part of my standard tes to ing that I do when ever I buy a new lens.

Again, I do think the One will have less noise if taken of the same subject. But since the lighting is quite contrasty, and contrasty lighting is a weakness of the one, the pics taken could well be far worse then the S4 as a result. I just won't have the phone for another month or two when the lady is due her upgrade.

Well, all I can say is that if those came out of my one, I would be very disappointed.

why? Again, it's the worst case for low light. Or not typical to what one would normally take. It's an extreme or what most would never do normally. It's why I took it. To see what the worst case would be.

I have plenty of low light pics, but I refuse to post them as they are of people. And without thier permission, I won't post them even though they would never find out.

Again, the best review I find is from Alex of AC. He took pics under some of the best lighting, even at night. So if you are looking to compare, then that is the best place to start.

Nah.

I know what the one can do in the right hands. Nothing against Alex but I don't feel that reviews are very helpful. Better to see pictures from someone that you can tell by looking at their pictures that they have an interest and the skill to see the true capablities of the camera.

That is why your pictures are so disappointing, and your explanation of them is so underwhelming. I asked for low light pics for the s4 because I want to see what it can do, and I thought based on all your comments you would be able to provide a good example or two.

You have been for weeks criticizing the One and ultrapixels and claiming the one has no special low light capablities vs. the s4. Then you post up these horrid pictures, blame their horridness on 1) humidity, 2) lack of time to get good shots 3) lighting conditions 4) taking shots with arms extended like a noob, 5) trying to test under worst possible conditions, etc.

You come in a contentious thread to post up shots like that - and even have the nerve to say the one would do no better? The daylight shot? You criticize Jerry's vastly better daylight shot?

Now I find that you don't even have the one but you have been pontificating on it's lack of capablities for weeks.

Doesn't wash with me.

Either take some shots that you are proud of and post them up or I have to assume that this is the best that you and the s4 can do.

Here are a couple of shots I took recently. The day light ones I like, as well as the close up ones, but the night pic never came out right, no matter what I tried so I think this is that worse case scenario you're talking about.

Folks, let's keep the discussion civil. The discussion in the thread has been pretty interesting. The bickering? Not so much.

I actually thought Jerry's lincoln shot did ok. There could be some blow out but it is hard to tell based on the size, and sometimes you can pull what looks like blow out back with exposure adjustments in post (snapseed/whatever). The shadow detail looked pretty good too. Maybe a little loss under the car, but again, probably able to pull that out in post if you wanted to.

The colors didn't strike me as washed out, but realistic. If you want to bump saturation or vibrance that is certainly a possiblity as well.

I do agree that in general, I would like to see better dynamic range out of the camera, but I don't know how that compares with other phone cameras because this is the first one I have ever taken more than about 30 shots on or really cared what the photos looked like. With my previous phones the photos were so bad that I just didn't use the camera much at all.

Having said that, theoretically it should be better than smaller pixel cameras with regard to dynamic range. Only 2 reasons it wouldn't be - 1) software that isn't up to speed or 2) sensor design not up to speed. I hope it is the software.

While I agree that Jerry's photo of the car is not bad, it is far from great. Now while I agree that you can pull more from it in post prossesing, an image that is better with far more dynamic range will be able to pull out even more.
And while I agree that your new phone is far better then you have ever used, there are better cameras on phones today that take better pics in daylight. The S4 is one of them. But this is not to say that the htc one is bad. Just that it had some shortcomings and is far better then many phones of the past.

I will say that I'm glad that you also agree with me that this could be more then just software and could also be hardware related or a combo of both. Not many here want to be that honest about this phone, and it is refreshing to see.

I'm also glad that you are taking many pics with your new phone. I too hated to use my old phones as a camera for the same reasons you do. But we are lucky today to have such great phones that can also be used as a camera too.

Better is a point of view.. the lag on the s4... for me.. makes the ONE a better option because I don't need to blow up my pics. everyone thinks sharper/larger = better.. but if you are viewing these pics on a standard sized screen that just isnt the case.. the cameras are simply different and anyone basing the purchase of a phone on them needs to know that... the S4 is not "better".

Alex and other reviewers take shots on full auto because they want to show what a phone can do for the typical person who would normally never make adjustments to any settings or go to extremes to get a result that youbwould consider art. I did that test much in the same way as Alex would for the same reasons. I'm sorry if you can't or won't understand that.

There are plenty of wonderful daylight and low light shots of the S4 located in the sticky section that are also Unedited and unadjusted in anyway that make for wonderful examples of just how good the S4 is on daylight as well as low light. Rathet look at flicker? Plenty of edited and unedited shots to see as well.

My points about how the One's lack of dynamic range and size of pixels not helping that much if at all, are the result of just how much it is not that much better then the S4 that had fantastic dynamic range even in the worst night or low light photos never mind the daylight ones. Like them our not, it is proven and we'll agreed that the S4 is better in bright light in all reviews and most will say at night is not that bad. So is the S4 perfect? Lol, no. But for a camera to have 3 times the pixels, dynamic range and vastly more detail because of a higher resolution is no thing to laugh at and something HTC should have worked on more before release.

As for my examples, I couldn't care less if you hate them. They were the worst case for any lens/camera. And if you think that my testing methods are inferior, then I welcome any advice. But until you can post some helpful hints, then I'll look at your reply as fud and antagonistic, or wothless.

Have a great day

I agree, better is a point of view. The problem is that you are one of the few that might disagree with everyone. Not that your thoughts are wrong, just not the norm.

Take the lag you speak of for a moment. While unrelated to photography, my S4 has no lag and at worst doesn't exhibit even a stutter 99% of the time.

A friend of mine was at the bowling ally last night and he, like me is a huge HTC fan. So I was not surprised that he walked in with a new htc one. When spoken to, he said he really wanted to try a Samsung product but herd nightmares on line about the lag. So I handed him my S4 and told him to play with it. He was deeply suprised that when texting or looking at the gallery that there was no lag like he heard. I then told him to use any browser and play with it some more and again was suprised that he saw no lag. I then told him that I still didn't update my phone to the new software that reduces such lag or stuttering and he was like WTF?

My point is that while I do once in a blue get what I call stuttering, it is so rare and overblown here on this site that I can only say that the people who do have it bad, either have a broken phone or thier carrier did something to mess up touchwize badly. Thankfully I don't have this issue even without the update. You should try the S4 in a shop. You might not like it, but it shouldn't lag. In fact it makes 2 year old phones look stupid slow and laggy.

It isn't just a matter of full auto. It is a matter of choice of focus point, choice of exposure point, choice of framing. And I understand it fine. That is why they are not very helpful to discern the camera's output capability.

I looked in the s4 camera thread- no good examples of low light that I could see. By low light I mean shots with people in low light. I posted one of mine with ISO of 2000 and shutter of 1/17th. I see nothing in the s4 forum that can come close to matching it. I was hoping for an example that the photographer could give details to, as to ISO and shutter as well so that I could better compare. I have a feeling low light for the s4 is closer to 800 ISO instead of 2000 ISO under those circumstances.

I guess it is off to flickr to try to find something since you are unwilling or unable to post one up.

Well, I don't think you have made any valid point about the one's dynamic range in comparison to the s4. The advantage of the s4 in good light is only resolution that I can see. Nice for cropping but I sure don't want to give up low light abilites of the One just to be able to do heavy cropping in the s4. I just do my cropping before the shot.

As for my examples, I couldn't care less if you hate them. They were the worst case for any lens/camera. And if you think that my testing methods are inferior, then I welcome any advice. But until you can post some helpful hints, then I'll look at your reply as fud and antagonistic, or wothless.

What were you testing? The ability to take bad photos? Surely that is the easiest thing to do. Why post them as an example of low light capablities? I am pretty certain that I wasn't the only one that was disappointed by them. Those look like the photos taken by One owners that are complaining that the camera is no good. I could have taken those with the phone I had 2 generations ago. Here is my helpful hint: when trying to demonstrate that a camera can take good photos, post good photos.

In closing, I am still amazed that you are able to discern all the shortcomings of the HTC One and you don't have one. I look to your future postings regarding the HTC Camera as fud and antagonistic, or worthless.

Have a great day

I mean the shutter lag.. that comes with the 13MP lol .. not the S4 system lag. the speed at which the HTC takes a picture is the fastest i have ever seen..

Sorry i wasn't clear. I have no doubt the S4 is a nice phone, i just think for the normal person the ONE camera is the way to go.. and i agree.. on a tech forum my opinion may be the less popular one.=)

In daylight the S4 is not slow and can do bursts of at least 4 or 5 frames per second. In night mode, yes, there is prossesing going on so you wait a moment like you would for HDR. But like I posted, there is no reason that you cant shoot on auto in low light. No reason you can't also shoot on sports mode at night as well.

But I agree, normally the htc one is super fast.

There is no doubt the HTC shoots quick shots. The S4 has some shutter lag in med-low light.

have the US versions received the camera update that the International One got at the end of April?

? Improvement to sound capture with Zoe
? Noise reduction in slow motion movie capture
? Improved color reproduction and dynamic range (reduced over-exposure in non-HDR images) in certain conditions
? Fix to display correct ISO in EXIF information when ISO settings are manually changed by the user
? Improved system performance and stability

if not, it seems like many of the issues mentioned here get addressed

I just wanted to show a couple photos of the low light performance, real world setup with the HTC One. I'm comparing it in the exact moment with a Nexus 4. I know it is not the same as the SG4 but it does highlight some of the low light performance. The photos were taken at dusk.

HTC One no flash:

HTC One.jpg

F-Stop = 2
Exposure Time = 1\15 sec
ISO-804
No Flash, Auto
Not night mode. I didn't want to switch modes.

Nexus 4 with flash:

Nexus 4 with Flash.jpg

And Nexus 4 without flash:

Nexus 4.jpg

Without flash photos has ISO-1600. Exposure with without flash is 1\13 sec. With flash exposure time was 1/23 sec and ISO-1200.

For me, the quality of the image looks great on my 24" 1920x1200 color matching IPS monitor. More then enough for this quality of of low light photo taking on a phone. If I was somewhere that I thought I would want a nicer photo then I would bring my dSLT. And usage may vary. I notice that many of my non planned shots tend to be evening when I'm out with friends.

So tonight I decided to run an experiment. I took three low light pictures, all with varying levels of ambient light. The first one only had a laptop screen as the main source. The second, had a nearly closed laptop screen. The last had no other source besides the streetlights out the window. (The other pictures had those as well, but they were not the main source)

After taking them, I can honestly say that anyone that says the Ones camera isn't great doesn't know what they're talking about. I can count on three fingers phone cameras that can do this, and one of them isn't so much a phone camera as it is a camera phone. The results are just unreal.

Can you share the image details? ISO and shutter speed? I assume this was in auto or night mode? Thanks
