Camera not very good

Perhaps because most people tend to quickly jab at a shutter button instead of using a steady even pressure.

I tend to get better results using the on-screen shutter button, or using the the physical button in burst-mode to pick the best (usually the 3rd or 4th shot is in better focus than the first couple).

The camera only works great outdoors. It sucks for everything else or is a hit or miss. I take pictures and videos inside the production floor and I've been in touch with HTC engineers providing samples

The less light you have, the slower the shutter. The slower the shutter the more the skill of the photographer comes in to play. If flash is turned on, the limited LED flash is only good for short distances.

My biggest issue with burst mode is that I can't get to 99 shots. The phone will randomly shut off after any number of pictures. The most I got it to take was 54. I have the feature that only lets you take 20 photos in burst mode turned off. Not sure how to fix this. It's not really that big a deal, to be honest, but someday, it could cause me to miss a picture that I want.

The other issue is that the camera definitely would not be able to take 99 shots in 20 seconds or whatever the claim was. The time it took 54, it took about 20 seconds.

Like I said, not a big deal at all, just curious if anyone knows how to fix this. I should try my wife's out and see if her's is the same.

Other than these two very small issues, I have not had a problem with the phone. I love it. Upgrading from the Hero, this phone was worth the wait.

The number of images you can get is entirely dependent on the speed of your memory card. Buy the fastest (most expensive) card available if this is important to you.

I think the camera is excellent for a phone camera. Here is panorama I took this past weekend. I have no complaints.

The lens is (including the surround) is significantly smaller then a dime and is situated in a phone thinner then a laptop hard drive. Its a sub device on a cell phone folks and not even close to a main function of the device itself. Maybe people will take this into context when calling it crap. For what it IS its amazing if not perfect, for what its NOT it may be a bit off. But again for being a TINY fraction of the size of even a point and click cheapo camera it takes pretty damn nice photos. Would I use it to make a living as a photographer? No, but again its not a dedicated camera designed for that. How well does your DSLR surf the web? SSH? MMS/SMS? Phone calls?

Take it for what it IS and stop putting it into a league its NOT in. Its a damn good cell phone or point and click camera nothing more nothing less and to expect more out of a sub device this size is lunacy.

As a photographer, I am blown away by the quality that little camera can put out. The lens is f/2.0. For a phone, the quality is amazing.

I went to NYC with a friend that has one recently and the picture he did (in HDR) from 30 Rock looks EXACTLY like the one they are now selling at IKEA.

It's no SLR, but did anyone really expect that? It's great for what it is designed for. Best camera I've seen on a phone so far.

try using HDR with the remote bluetooth shutter control. epic win

Did ANYONE in this thread compare it to a DSLR? (i really don't know but i'm asking since everyone keeps reference one).

I'm comparing it with what i've seen from the iPhone 4, Samsung Galaxy SII and now SIII....and imo, its below those three.

I also think it comes up short of some nokia symbian phones as well as the new Sony Xperia phone.


I think its better than the galaxy nexus, but not by all that much. Its soft shots with muted colors.

None of them but that's what makes it so bad IMO. HTC has always fallen behind when it comes to camera quality and with the way they touted the camera on this phone most thought that would be a thing of the past. Instead they just improved the software and added stuff like pics while recording instead of actually improving the photo quality. There's no way anyone can objectively say the pics in this thread are better than the GS3, IP4S or even the GS2 without being biased. I still don't understand how people are looking at these same pics I am and saying that they look great.

Granted, the photo quality on the 3D was downright terrible so if you're coming from that or any other HTC phone then yes, you're going to see a drastic improvement. However, in the grand scheme of things for this to be a next gen phone the quality of the pics is severely lacking. That's the gripe people are having, not the fact that it's the worst HTC camera ever.

I'm not sure how this thread got so long and why. This is a camera on a cell phone. Now the claims HTC has for the camera on this phone need to be taken with a grain of salt. Is it the best camera on a cell phone, probably not. Is it the best camera on a HTC phone, yes. Are there people who based their cell phone purchase on the camera, I'm sure there are but I'm also sure that number is very small. If the camera was the most important feature for you on your cell phone then you wouldn't be in this forum. Now I think it is safe to say that this is not the best camera on a cell phone, it is also safe to say that this is the best camera HTC has put in their phone. So can we now stop going at each other over something as petty as a camera on a phone that offers so much more then the camera itself?

I've got a SanDisk 16GB class 10 card and it works flawlessly with video and photos. There is an enormous difference in read/write speeds with the class 2 and 4 cards that are the standard fare in phones and stores nowadays.

The best and fastest card is a class 10. The largest you can use is 64 Gigabytes. I prefer the quality and reliability of SanDisk.

I have a 64 Gb SanDisk Ultra Class 10 in my EVO4GLTE. You can currently get one on Amazon for $99.00.

On a day to day every day use, its pretty much fact.

Sure you can sneak out a better picture here and there if conditions are perfect...but most people want a consistent shooter.

FYI: the "Class" numbers you see on SD cards are rough estimates of read/write performance.

So a class 2 is supposed to give you 2 MB/s. Class 10 is supposed to give 10 MB/s.

I have a class 4 32-GB transcend card ($20 from new-egg), and it does perform very close to 4 MB/sec.

I also have a smaller 4GB class 6 card, and it actually performs better than 6 MB/s.

As the original poster in this thread....I was not trying to compare DSLR (or even point and shoot cameras) to the Evo camera. I have not purchased a new phone for several years (coming from an HTC Touch..about 5 years old). I was expecting the camera on my new Evo 4g to be much better...but its not. In low light it is very bad. I understand its just a cheap camera stuck into a cell-phone, I guess I was hoping for it to be a little better...no big deal. I still love the phone and will use the camera for outdoor shots but may still choose to carry my point and shoot if I know I am going to want to shoot indoors.

I have not done any direct comparisons with my wifes iPhone 4s, but I have used it a bunch and feel like it does alot better in low light.

I just came from the Evo 3d. After reading the reviews, I couldn't wait to test out the camera. First off this camera kills the Evo 3d's camera in every way which was nice. However, I just met up with my brother and he has a Galaxy S 2 and his camera blows away this camera (at least indoors). I was so disappointed; I kept messing with the settings to try to even match that of the GS2 and still couldn't come close. Well, this is in regards to indoor lighting and taking pictures at restaurants and the sort. Pictures that are taken outside I would say it is about the same if not a little better than the GS2, but inside its not even close. I take most of my pics inside and I am disappointed.

I'll admit though, the screen, build quality, and everything about this phone is way better than the GS2, I just wished the camera was better
