Hello all,

So I have been thrilled with the phone after having had 3 fascinates with various defects.

The signal is fantastic and I like the overall look and feel of the phone.

Well today I tried taking some photos and everything is coming out grainy out blurred.

When I called Verizon they said I need to go in to get my phone updated? I already have gingerbread so he said that update was just to do with the phone's software?

Also can any of you answer some of the questions I have in this thread:

Thank you for all the help.

Sample pictures really help with photography questions. Terms like blurry or grainy mean different things to different people. Sometimes (like taking pictures indoors of moving things at night without a flash) this is more of an issue of technique, other times certain types of blur indicate a dirty lens, etc.

The first thing is to not use the camera button and use the screen button. just make sure your settings are set accordingly.

Amusingly, I always get better results using the physical button, but you need to learn how to use it. Half push to focus, complete the push to snap the shot. Roll your finger over it instead of making a jerky movement. It's one of the reasons I'm not looking forward to the DX2. That said, photography is about finding what works for you, and my technique may not be something you can apply very easily. :)

Wow that is really strange when using the software button most of the images come out ok.

Whereas with the physical button the camera refuses to focus.

When using the physical button, as someone else said, press and hold it half way to focus, then when you have your composition, continue pressing the button all the way. Like most / all camera buttons, it's a two-stage button.

Other than that, check your camera settings. Some general tips that I always use:

  • Set the camera to use maximum resolution, you can always "dumb it down" later (resize for a smaller image for posting). There are 8 megapixles here, use them all for best quality.
  • Do not use in-camera digital zoom. This causes the camera to crop and resize back up to your selected resolution and the built-in camera software is bad at it. You can crop and resize later with good software.
  • Check your "scene" setting. If you're on "night portrait" and shooting in daylight, this can cause noise. Likewise, if you're on something else and shooting at night, the longer exposure will cause noise.

When I use the physical button the camera doesn't focus on anything.

When pressed halfway the camera tries to focus and then fails followed by two beeps.

I have tried it with multiple lighting conditions in and outside. Also changing the scene setting makes no difference.

Sounds like the "Camera" application may be corrupted on your X. Try one of the replacement camera apps. If those also fail, you likely have defective hardware. If a third party app works, you will probably need to re-install the ROM to fix this (the "Camera" app is part of the firmware).

It sounds like you are on the macro setting and trying to take regular pictures. That would also explain why they are blurry. Make sure you check to see what "scene" setting you have selected.

No it does this on every setting.

I even does it on Macro when trying to take an image of something up close.

So a little update.

I took it to the Verizon store for the software update the Verizon rep on the phone told me about and they looked at me like I was crazy.

Even after reading the notes in my account he had no idea what the man was talking about.

So when I called Verizon back to tell them about what the store told me the rep on the phone said she was having a hard time understanding me so they are sending me a replacement Droid X lol.
