I'm experiencing some buyer's remorse (sorta maybe), due to video and audio recording quality when capturing videos. Was hard for me to leave samsung, but removable battery is just too important for me (as is camera, but sammy's camera is just fine).
The camera on this gets rave reviews for the most part (and I agree for still shots), but I'm having major issues with the video recording quality and the audio recording that goes with it.
After a lot of experimenting, I really believe that the "STEADY" setting is turning off OIS, and then the phone applies digital-only correction (and not very well). I speculate that LG did it that way as a fix to their version of OIS, badly distorting the video at times (it looks warped often). Has anyone else done this kind of comparison, and if so what do you see? LG's OIS for video is pretty amazing when you're trying to be very still, but any movement at all such as slight panning etc and you get the distortions and it's not smooth at all. And using STEADY isn't nearly as good / natural looking as the digital video stabilization on my old Note 3. For me I'll probably leave the G5 on OIS all the time and just live with the warping effect.
Next serious issue for me is the audio recording quality when capturing video. The mic is WAY less sensitive than my Note 3, and it sounds very tinny. Sounds really bad in my opinion. Am I the only one?
So overall I'm really bummed by these things. I really wanted to like this phone more than I do. Tomorrow is my last day to return. I wish I would have experimented much sooner (didn't even take it out of the box for a week, what a dummy).
Back to OIS vs STEADY, if STEADY really does turn off OIS (which I think is true) then for taking stills it's best to leave the camera in OIS all the time. For those that want OIS for stills and Steady for video, the G5 should provide an optional setting that automatically switches to Steady for recording video (even if it adds a tiny delay). No time to mess with settings like that each time you open the app.
