I am using 12 MP. I'm not bothered by the picture not filling up the whole screen.
 
The widescreen (16:9) 8mp option is just cropping a 4:3 12mp photo. You're better off shooting in 4:3 12mp mode and cropping it yourself later if you want. You'll physically be able to capture more of a scene with 4:3.

Though it is an extra couple steps for the rare times I want to crop, I use the 4:3 so that I capture more. Also, zooming in accomplishes the same thing, and there is more to zoom around on.

Actually no, because the 16:9 is a slight zoom in... Best way to see this effect is start out in 4:3 and the switch to taking a video... You'll see what gets cropped out on your screen when you make the switch
