Hello everyone.
I just got my galaxy nexus yesterday and i couldnt be hapier.
My phone came with 4.0.2 and is not rooted, stock, and not yaktju, so its not updated directly by google. My carrier never rolls updates for any phone except if there is a serious bug, so im wondering if there is a noob-suitable method of manually updating and is it worth it.

Thank you for the guide. I'm waaay over my head with it, but I'm delighted to hear that its Sam and not my carrier who pushes the update, meaning I'm not stuck forever with what my carrier sold me.
You made my day.

Just to clarify, the updates will be coming from Samsung, but in many cases carriers will have to certify before allowing them to push the update out.

This step shouldn't keep carriers from releases an update, but it will delay the timeline...

Flashing to yakju is still the quickest and best way to have the latest update.

I just flashed my device yesterday to yakju and received the update today !

Ya mine came as not yakju so was stuck at 4.0.1. I originally just unlocked the bootloader last December. Earlier this week I relocked the bootloader and reflashed the stock ROM and it magically became 4.0.2 AND a yakju device. Then 2 days ago I got the OTA 4.0.4 update, YAY!

lol that's nice, yeah I even flashed it to the stock ROM "yakju" I noticed its more polished now and not laggy, even the rotation is really better than v4.0.2 and fast multitasking, I didn't realize I'll get the update that fast I assumed that I'll wait few more weeks to get it depending on my region update release.

Oh rats!
I've known of only one instanse when my carrier allowed an OS upgrade and that was way back when they introduced SMS messaging and many phones needed one. Other than that, they don't release or allow upgrades. They even specify that any atempt to do so by the user, voids the warranty.
That means I'm stuck with 4.0.2 for good.

Well I followed the XDA and Android central instructions on unlocking the boot loader and flashing 4.0.4. Yes it can be daunting but not insurmountable. 20 minutes and was on 4.0.4 running fine. This is GSM not CDMA.

Might be best to hang on, the 4.0.4 ota has been pulled by google due to bugs in the radio (signal dying when idle 2hrs+)

Is it the same if I'm on 4.0.1 :(
Gsm version.
I never tried messing with rooting.

I'm a noob too...

If I do this, does it void the warranty? I'm on Rogers, stock, locked (for now), 4.0.2. No idea when they'll push 4.0.4

I've only had it a week, and I gotta admit I'm a little disappointed in the reception and battery life.

Did they officially pull 4.0.4 from OTA? I'd heard they were investigating a possible issue but not that they had confirmed it and pulled the update. If true I guess I can stop hitting check for updates every 6 hours ...

You could still manually update, but would recommend waiting for 4.0.5 or whatever they label it as
