Can I change the bootloader on Nexus Android Phones?

[AC Question]

I was wondering has someone tried any of the following:
1. Do we have the source code of bootloaders for Android devices?
2. If source code is available, can we build it and replace the bootloader on the Android Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) phones?

All the above with reference to Nexus devices would be a bang!!

Have you looked deeper in the forums here? Most device forums have a "rooting ROMs and Hacks" section. You likely need to become a member (it's free!) to post there.
