Can I change the user name on my phone without a hard reset?

If I can change the name, must I also make a new G Mail account to associate it with that name?

Or must I make a new G Mail and then reset the phone & change the name, after backing up what I want to keep?

Samsung didn't seem to be able to help me when I called them.

By username, do you mean the primary Google account? On older phones, I think you can go to Settings>Accounts-Google, select the primary Google account, and remove it. Then select Add Account and add your Google account. But more recent phones require a full factory reset.
