Android Central Question

Is it possible to completely stop Android 9 from correcting my text as I am typing? I realize this means no spell checking as well.

To put a finer point on it: When I am typing a text or an email, I want to see what I have actually typed, not what Android thinks I mean.

Currently, the only way I can defeat Android's attempts to decide on its own what I mean to say is to type very slowly. Is there another way?

Check the settings of whatever keyboard app you're using and look for a setting to turn off auto-correction. You may still get spell check (such as a red underline), depending on the keyboard app, which may have its own setting to turn off if you wish as well.

Thanks for your reply. I'm using the stock keyboard that comes with the first gen Pixel phone. I believe it's GBoard. Unfortunately, no setting to turn off text correction.

Have you been having correction issues?
Lately, Gboard replaces my text with suggestions that are two, three, and four words long. I'm not even lifing my finger from the keys. And most of the time, they are way off.

Most of the time, Google's suggestions are way off. In addition, Google sometimes changes a word I have typed and replaces it with a word that Google thinks I meant to type. Then, when I tap on Google's word to edit it, the word instantly goes back to the word I originally typed!

It seems that every time we type in a Google app, we are also helping train Google's artificial intelligence. I'm sure that many people are fine with this and don't mind helping Google improve. More power to them. I would like to have the choice to stop Google from correcting my text.

I don't use GBoard for other reasons, but I thought it was a standard feature for keyboard apps to have an option to turn off auto-correction. The only other thing I could suggest with that one is to try swiping instead of tapping to type and see if accuracy improves. Or try another keyboard app. Unfortunately the only one I like and could suggest is Swype, which was bought out by Microsoft and subsequently abandoned. I don't think it's even on the Play store.

Looks like my choices are to type slowly - not the worst thing - or try another keyboard.

P.S. Glide typing (as Google calls it) relies on artificial intelligence to interpret finger movements.
