Can I delete the rom zip after I do a nandroid backup?

I have been rooting and flashing for a few years, but I could never find the answer to that question. I want to save some space on my internal sd card, and each backup file is as big as a rom file. Would I be able to do a restore if there was no rom file on my card?

Yes you can. Nandroid backup is self contained, you don't need anything else to restore it.
