I think Nova launcher (or at least the Prime version) will let you do that.

I'm 90% certain a new launcher won't solve my issue as the wave to wake has always been a hardware thing- last year's nexus didn't have it not only because it was a Moto customization but also because the IR sensors in the bezel were left out (pretty sure). My key 'wait and see' thing is a full breakdown of the new Sensor Hub to see if I can have touchless activation of the display (for when I'm cooking and don't want to get stuff all over my phone)

I think Nova launcher (or at least the Prime version) will let you do that.

You can add double tap to sleep but not double tap to wake in Nova Prime.

I got mine today and came here for answers. I kept unknowingly nudging it and I'd see the screen turned on and I didn't know why.
In trying to reproduce it... it only seems to work like 1 out of 10 times. Not sure if you need to wait for the phone to fall deep asleep? The feature seems a bit spotty right now.... or I could just be doing it wrong.
