Can I double tap the screen on the Nexus 5x to wake it up
On the Nexus 5s, will I be able to double tap the screen to wake it up?

The processor can do it, but they are using the custom die for other things. And yeah it sounds like they want their FPS to be an instant (< .6 seconds) unlock. It would be strange for Google not to implement it this time since double tap wake is pretty much a default feature for all LG devices, but I guess Google is more interested in your fingerprints.

According to the AMA on Reddit from the Nexus team you can simply nudge the phone to activate the ambient display and then unlock. That's good enough for me.

I have no experience with ambient display of Nexus phones generally. Does the phone know not to turn on the ambient display when it's in your pocket and you get a notification?

I assume that you can wake it up with the fingerprint sensor, which would eliminate the need for the double tap function.
How close to the Moto X wave for ambient display will the nudge to wake thing be for the 5x and 6p? Will it be strictly motion or could I still Jedi Mind Trick my phone into showing the time and recent notifications?
Heehee thankfully, the fingprint sensor is on the back. So on the table we cannot wake the screen up
