Help connecting Asus tablet to TV via hdmi

When I try to connect my Asus TF700T via a micro hdmi to hdmi cord to my visio hdtv it says 'retrieving data' and then 'not supported'. Please help.

Welcome to Android Central! Sorry for this very basic question, but it's worth asking--you're certain it's an HDMI connection, and not a USB connection, right?

On the tablet, go to Settings>Display--is there an option there for HDMI output? I used to have a TF300, and I vaguely recall being able to turn HDMI output on or off.
