Can I get some help connecting my Tablet to my PC?

Connecting to a pc

I'm having difficulty (again) connecting my tablet to my pc. I've successfully connected it in the past, then it's not connected etc. The tablet tells me it's connected as a media device, and the pc, running windows 8.1 beeps when I connect it ( making me think the cables' ok), but there is no sign of it on the pc. Where could it be hiding?

I haven't played with Win 8 (I only have Macs at home and Win 7 at work), is there an equivalent to Windows 7's "Devices and Printers" panel? If so, it'll show in there if it's connected as a media device.
