Nexus 4 audio problem

We inherited a nexus 4 from our son. The phone has had a hard life and came with a broken screen and lcd. I fixed that, but now there is no sound either at the ear connection or the speaker. There IS sound if a headphone is connected. After multiple searches I have seen something about a software issue, but this is not the case since the phone has been wiped and system software reloaded. It must be a hardware issue - perhaps the headphone jack is cutting things out?

Is this a simple hardware problem? I don't see anything wrong with the motherboard. The phone isn't much use if I can't hear it ring.

Re: Nexus 4 audio problem

When you pull the headphone plug out, does the phone display the "headphones disconnected" message? If not, maybe the jack is fubared. Search for "headphone jack fix " in the play store and try to find an app or two which claim to let you override the phone's headset autodetection and control the audio routing.

Re: Nexus 4 audio problem

You may have the right idea. The phone doesn't show the headphones being plugged in or removed. Maybe that unit is faulty and causing the problem. I can get a replacement for ~$6 on ebay and give it a try. The apps didn't help unfortunately.

Thanks much for the suggestion.

Re: Nexus 4 audio problem

Regrettably I have had no luck. The replacement headphone module behaves the same way as the original. I still have sound only when headphones are plugged in. There is no indication on the phone, however, whether the phones are plugged in or not. There is no sound when the headphones are unplugged from the either the earpiece or external speaker. I inspected the motherboard for damage and don't see any. Unless someone has a better idea, it may be time to give up.
