Can I get some help with a system update?

Problem with system update.

Hi, everyone.

I have a Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603) bought about 3 months ago, it came with 4.4.4 Kitkat. I checked for the system update for lollipop but it wasn't showing up, tried every possible ways but i wasn't able to update it automatically. So at last i downloaded a flashable firmware recommended by a tutorial which was french generic. File name was D6603_23.4.A.0.546_Customized FR.ftf

I successfully flashed it on my phone and had no problem at all. But after few days, a notification came up saying a new system update is available for my device. The build number for it is 23.4.A.1.232 and the size is only 236MB. However, after i complete downloading the update, it says "Could not verify the update", tried redownloading several times but still the same. I searched around the internet for the similar problem and found that rooting a device can cause such issue but my phone isn't rooted. I even tried some other solutions which worked for some people like factory resetting the device. I reset my phone 3 times but nothing, my bootloader is not unlocked as well. Still the problem isn't solved. I've also tried using PC Companion as most of the people recommended for others having the similar problem but somehow, it says my device is up to date. It's not showing the firmware at all. Can anyone tell me what could be the reason?

Thanks.

Re: Problem with system update.

Hi, if you manually downloaded a firmware and flashed it to your device then your device is rooted.

Re: Problem with system update.

Hello, thanks for replying.

I checked whether my device is rooted or not using some third party applications from the play store and even a computer software named Kingo ROOT but the apps resulted that my phone is not rooted. If these apps aren't worth using for such cases, are there any ways I can figure out if any changes were applied to the firmware and how to solve them?

Hi and welcome to Android Central, thanks for joining :) when you downloaded the firmware on your phone previously, how did you do that? if several apps are telling you the device isn't rooted then I'm trying to figure out how you could install a custom rom.

Re: Problem with system update.

I downloaded that firmware from a tutorial about how to manually update Z3 to android 5.1.1 using a flashtool, so i don't think it's a custom rom? I am still not sure. The tutorial claimed it will still be as official as the OTA update process.

All i did was, placed the ftf in firmware folder and connected my device in recovery mode then clicked flash. It flashed without any problem, and my phone wasn't rooted before flashing the firmware (while it was still running 4.4.4) as i bought the device from amazon and didn't have anything modified in it.

Re: Problem with system update.

What he flashed isn't a custom rom, but a sideloaded official firmware from a different reason. Much like some people with the S6 did when international models got 5.1.1 and US carriers took their time releasing.

OP, what is your official region and carrier info?

This phone was bought factory unlocked from USA and later brought it to the southern asia (Nepal), the OTA update for 5.1.1 wasn't showing for me when i was still on 4.4.4 cause of this region so i had to manually flash the firmware using the flashtool. But now, somehow after i flashed it, i received this update but can't install. I am using my country's carrier which you may not know called NTC. Just a thought but i don't think it has something to do with the carrier since the phone is unlocked?
