Welcome to Android Central! It's supposed to go blank if you hold it up to your ear while calling (to prevent your face from pressing any onscreen buttons). This is a function of the proximity sensor, which is right near the front camera. So if there's something else blocking it (like your finger, an ill-fitting case, or a dirty screen protector), the phone might think it's up against your ear during a call, and turn the screen off.
