Can I get superuser access without rooting my Note II?

Hello Android Central. I'm waaaay outta my depth here...

Here's my issue. I got a replacement Note II from Samsung (my first one had a defect, caught it within 30 days) and I'm finally sitting down to transfer all my data to the new hardware. Problem is, I've had the wonky phone long enough to have put a not-insignificant amount of time into a couple of games on my phone (notably, FF Dimensions) and my SwiftKey has gotten almost clairvoyant. I've been trying for a few days to copy the savegame and other app data to the external SD card so that I can easily transfer it to the new phone, but I'm not having any success.

So far as the savegame goes, it's apparently in \data\data\obb. But,the \data directory on my phone says it's empty. And there's no second data directory under the other data dir I can find (\sdcard\Android\data). One post I read says I need "superuser access" to be able to see the second data directory. I've tried a couple of different apps (ES File Explorer for example) that are supposed to provide superuser directory browsing access, but none of them work, and apparently all for the same reason: I need to root my phone (well, phones, as I'll need to be able to plant the copied data into the new one too). U

Now, I'm REALLY reluctant to do this. I fancy myself as a pretty smart geek, but the idea of cracking my phone's OS fills me with the heebie-jeebies. I'm praying that someone here much smarter than I am knows some way to access the data I'm looking for (and why the hell is it so well hidden to begin with?!? Opening it up would just encourage Android users to stay with Android!), without rooting my phones. Failing that, can someone tell me how to safely root my two Note It's, and how to UNroot them afterwards?

Thanks in advance everybody!

Welcome to Android Central, the method of rooting your device depends on the Carrier you have. Please share that along with the build number on your device which can be found in settings>about phone>build number.

Thanks DroidXCon. My carrier is Telus (I'm Canadian), and the build # is JZO54K.I317MVLBMA3.

Thanks everyone!

No you cannot. You're never logged into your phone as root in the first place, just a standard user. Stock oem software doesn't even have the su binary installed in the first place or the extra tools to use it. Rooting is the procedure that installs it on your device and allows you to use it.

No, you cannot request for superuser permission without root.

Ok, is it possible to root my phone's and then UNroot them then?

And, how do I do this safely? I'm terrified of "bricking" my phone's...

Thanks!

If you followed every instruction carefully, you won't brick your phone. Even if you do, flashing back to the original firmware will unbrick it.

You can unroot by flashing the original firmware. At least that is what I did for my Note and S4.
