Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

I'm on an AT&T family plan and the price and coverage is quite nice for me. However, as an android user I've grown tired of ATT's very slow or completely skipped upgrades. So now that I'm looking at the S6, I'm wondering if I could grab the international version and use on ATT? My two concerns are: Will I then get the updates from Kiess as soon as Samsung releases them as opposed to after ATT pretends to review it and add their junk? And will the international one still get HSPA+ and ATT's LTE, etc? Basically I want the phone to work fully but don't want to have to deal with the carrier middleman for updates. I know I could go Nexus but I'd rather not right now. Thanks for any help.

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Yes it will work on AT&T. As for your questions:

1. Yes you should still get updates via Kies and OTA.
2. This would depend on which version of the international GS6 you get. Different versions are made for different countries for their respective data capabilities. I would check the AT&T radio frequency chart HERE <- Click That, and compare it with the radio frequencies of the S6 version you are getting to see if it will support AT&T LTE

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Any idea yet which international version will have full compatibility with all At&t & T-mobile HSPA + & LTE bands?

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Unless I'm mistaken, you're looking for the unlocked western European model. Like you would get in the UK. That should work perfectly.

How,does,this solve his issue?

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Samsung usually avoids making their international phones compatible with American LTE bands (and sometimes HSPA bands as well). This is intentional, the carriers don't want people buying international unlocked versions, and Samsung doesn't seem to mind the concession if it means getting their device onto their shelves. But it's horribly annoying if one wants to buy an international version and use it here, because Samsung and AT&T not only don't want you to, but are willing to cooperate to make sure you can't.

We won't know until these things show up in stores with spec sheets, but for compatibility with AT&T, you'll want LTE Bands 2, 4, 5, 12, and 17. If you don't have all of those you're looking at limited LTE capability on AT&T. If you can't get Bands 5 and 17 then it's not even worth trying, those are AT&T's main LTE bands right now.

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Try GSM NATION they are selling an unlocked S6 and according to there chart that version is compatible with AT&T. I'm getting mine from them. I'm done with AT&T models. Also the tmobile version will work on att. Your still at the mercy of tmobile for updates but they are far less bloated and the bootloader is unlocked

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Isn't that pretty resource intensive given the size of updates?
I'm not sure what you're asking. International versions of Samsung phones get upgraded much more quickly than carrier variants. It doesn't take any extra resources for them to update his particular phone, it just downloads the update and installs it.

I am in the exact same situation. My wifes S5 on AT&T still has Kit Kat 4.4.4 while my nexus 5 will be getting 5.1 any day now. I too will be getting the s6 to use on att but dont wanna fool around w/ att's updates.

@smooth4lyfe or anyone else I have one additional question to the original poster. Will any of the international versions work with at&t VoLTE and hd voice?

I truly don't have the perfect answer, but I belive that in order to have that you'll need the carriers software included to perfectly match the nessasery requirements.
With a truly unlocked phone, you just get the basic firmware for radios.

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken, you might have to get the AT&T version of the phone to take advantage of AT&T HD Voice and VoLTE

I guess what I was asking since I take for granted that my update comes from a carrier domestically that it would be different. Now,that I think about, it doesn't matter since the device is registered with AT&T . There is the added expense of the device and having it shipped herer?

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Just checked GSM Nation and they don't list the specific LTE bands, just that their S6 will work on AT&T's LTE. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge (Unlocked)

Do you know where to look to see exactly which bands it will support?

" LTE Frequency: 700/ 750/ 850/ 800/ 900/ 1700/ 1800/ 1900/ 2100/ 2300/ 2400/ 2500/ 2600 Mhz" on the network compatibility tab. Looks like it supports ATT's 4 primary LTE bands but lacks band 29/30 that the ATT model has for futureproofing. So I'd say this will work perfectly on ATT assuming they mean Band 12/17 for the 700mhz compatibility. Not having band 29/30 won't be an issue for at least a year and even then they will only be supplemental bands to the 4 ATT are already using.

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Dang! Now I'm truly in a conundrum. I want the s6 but I also want updates in a timely fashion.

If I get the carrier branded phone and root and Rom could I still keep volte and HD voice? Or do custom roms not include these features. I'm out of the loop I haven't been in the Rom and root game since I sold my HTC evo and that was about 5 phones ago.

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

If you get the at&t or Veizon version you can forget about rooting and roming it. -->unlockable booloader

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

Would having rapid updates pushed out not be similar the issue I read about with the Note and a recent version of Lollipop? Sometimes it can be a blessing when a carrier takes so long to push out updates.

Re: Can I get the internal GS6 and use on AT&T

I'll take a year with quicker updates and ROMing over those supplemental bands. Hopefully there will be no issues. Having dealt with them before they are very precise on the band's and compatibility. They don't want you to return the phone. Profit margins are thin on non subsidized phones.
