I just got my G2 and IT was an option.
I still have full Google search loaded but no more pesky home screen garbage.

For my part, I distrust all big companies, and info conduits like telecoms, clouders, etc especially. I want the bare minumum of contact with them, and opportunity for them to collect information or permit tracking.

With that in mind, I disable and uninstall as much as I can, and use third-party stuff that I have complete control over instead. Since I don't have a phone, and just have tablets, I need very few "features" anyway (as do most people, really).

Same BS I have to go through when I or friends/family get a new laptop, except we don't yet have the ability to just reformat the drive and install a plain OS.

I just dragged it to a homescreen I wasn't using to get it out of the way. I put the google app as an icon on my primary homescreen, a little blue G that takes up little space but gets me to Google Now when I want to go there.

Its called 'search bar' on 4.2.
I made it go away by unchecking: Settings\Launcher\homescreen\searchbar

Nailed it!!!! That was the correct solution!

Nova launcher is exactly what I was looking for - much appreciated. After importing my settings from the stock Verizon Moto X 'Launcher', the Google search / microphone box was removed from all 5 pages. Instantly restored 20 blocks of space across all pages (4x1 x 5 pages), really opens up the screen, and throws in a nice page-switch rolling animation to boot. Also adds a page long-press Widgets option that was sorely missed. To make sure the launcher doesn't revert, I set it in Settings - Home to Nova Launcher.

You have to do a LONG PRESS FIRST before you try to drag the widget first to the trash can. PUT YOUR FINGER ON THE HOME SCREEN AND DO A LONG PRESS. your interface will change and allow you to TWEAK icons and widgets. After you do the long press, select WIDGETS, then you just choose the "google icon microphone bar" widget and drag the widget to the trash can. EASY. I'm on galaxy s5. All you guys are making it so dam complicated for him telling him to install a new launcher. Jaysus.
