Android Central Question

I rooted my phone from 6.X.X to 7.X.X while rooted by accident early 2017, but it seemed to break the root and updated. I just continued to use the phone because I no longer needed the application i rooted my phone for.

now I want to update to 8.0 Oreo, if i update my phone will i run into problems?

-I am not sure which method i used to root my phone if that matters at all.
-my phone still shows the "your device software cannot be checked for corruption,
please lock your bootloader" msg if i turn on my phone from a off state.
-phone is the Nexus 5x

There is no need to root your phone to update to Oreo. Google has the OTA images (doesn't wipe out your data) posted online, if you're comfortable setting up ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and using it to update your device, it actually goes pretty quick.
