can i use hotspot in my unlimited data plan?

Verizon will allow you to add unlimited official tether for 30 bucks a month.

if yes, how? thx

You can buy a mifi hotspot, forward your calls to your Google voice number, pull your SIM card out of phone and into the mifi. Connect your phone via wifi to the hotspot and get wifi calling through hangouts.

I did that during our summer road trip except at that time I forwarded my wife's calls to my number.

This only works if you are on an unlimited data plan and is not against your terms to use your sim in a mifi device.

The only problem is not getting text messages, they end up on the mifi device.

You can usually find one in the Swappa boneyard or craigslist for around $30.

I am very protective of my Unlimited Data Plan, so I tend to play by the rules all the time. Any time I want to turn on hotspot on my phone, I add the $30 unlimited hotspot feature to my plan. The $30 a month bothered me though, so for the longest time I never went through with adding the feature. Especially when I would only use it a couple weekends a month at most. Finally I realized that I can add the feature, use it's unlimited goodness to my hearts content, then remove the feature when I'm done. I always make the feature change as of "today", rather than the beginning or end of a billing cycle. In the end Verizon prorates the feature for the days you use it. If I turned it on for only 2 days in a month, I am only billed $2. I feel much better going that route vs foxfi or some other method.

You can solve the lack of text messages via Verizon's message (+) on your tablet. It works for me on my verizon lg g pad 7.0 when I use my SIM card with it. I can't forward my calls to my Google voice due to Verizon. But I get my voice messages if they leave one.

Use Foxfi (probably violates Terms and conditions)

Biggest problem with FoxFi is the way it keeps getting crippled by updates. Some phones work okay, others require a USB connection. And which is which constantly changes. I have up and went with the $30 add on, since it is prorated by how long I use it each month.

Can I turn the hotspot on/off with the Verizon app on my phone or do I have to contact them?

This is what I do when I am RV camping in the summer. I have an iPhone 4s for work so I just forward my calls to that phone and pop the SIM in the MiFi. I also have the Verizon text app on my iPhone 4s so I can still get texts.

With this method my daughter and her friends have been able to stream netflix and amazon prime with no issues. I think my biggest month last summer we hit 96GB of usage.

I paid $25 for the MiFi on fleebay and it was well worth it. Much better then messing around with root and the hotspot apps which never work for very long, which is what I used to do.

$30/month for unlimited hotspot was a little hard for me to stomach at first after tethering for free for so long, but after carriers have mostly moved over to tiered data and so little of it, it's such an amazing deal. As far as I know, Verizon is the only carrier that has ever officially offered unlimited hotspot. I'm stunned that they continue to offer it to people with unlimited data.

Yep they're the only ones who have done it.

They do it because they'd rather get the extra $30 compared to nothing. They legally can not come after you of block 3rd party applications, including hotspot work around.

Is their a certain model number I should look for or all MiFi devices the same?

I just upgraded my line from a nexus where I had been using a tether app for a couple of years for FREE Hotspot but with this upgrade I think this app will no longer work. I am not a fan of FoxFi because you are basically running through a private network and who knows what information they are gathering as you pass through.

I may still keep my nexus and just move my sim card to that phone anytime I plan on running hotspot for extended periods.

All MiFi devices are basically the same; though, there are some subtle differences. Take the two that Verizon sells:

1.) Verizon Jetpack MiFi 6620L | Verizon Wireless

2.) Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack MHS800L | Verizon Wireless

The first one works on both 3G and LTE (plus it has some bands that will allow it to work on T-Mobile and AT&T). The second one is LTE on Verizon only.

no issues for me using Foxfi and my note 2
