Can one root a WiFi Xoom, but run the stock ROM?

It seems like the root instructions for the WiFi Xoom all involve the Tiamant kernel. Is it possible to root the Xoom, but still run the stock ROM? I'd like to be able to do a full backup via Titanium, plus a couple of other tweaks, but I don't want to replace the ROM until after the SD card update (yes, I know Tiamant supports the SD card slot).

Apologies in advance if this question's been answered elsewhere. I searched the forum, but didn't find an obvious or intuitive answer.

Root is just that. No rom or anything. You will still be stock but have root access. In the root sticky you will find a great guide.

The Xoom root method just provides super user access to the stock ROM. So it doesn't affect anything regarding the battery life or any type of performance. Being rooted however does allow you to install any software you want which may affect things like battery life and performance, however you'll know if you install them.

Which brings up a different question -- is there a way to back up my current settings, etc., prior to rooting? It appears that the current root procedures blank the device. That didn't happen when I rooted my Droid X.

I too and hoping that a rooting method will be forthcoming that stops the need for a wipe. I was expecting something similar to my Nexus One rooting procedure but it seems I was mistaken.

Is a non-wipe root method likely or just plain impossible?

Plain impossible. Unlocking wipes. Can't root without unlocking.

It may be possible one day but we'll most likely need the honeycomb source to find an exploit.
