Can someone explain Location Services?

What is GPS Location Services? (I think I know this one)

I believe the following:

VZW Location Service is a tower assisted location... Standalone GPS Services is the most accurate using the GPS satellites... and the Google Location Service is Google browser location service to help when you search or use your browser to find a company or search item near your location, I believe this will be the least accurate location.

I usually leave the last one on to help with searches.

Actually, VZW Location Services and Google Location Services are two flavors of the same thing. They both calculate a rough position based off of cell towers. Google records and uses this data (anonymously) for various non-evil purposes like extrapolating traffic data for the "Traffic Layer" within Google Maps. God only know what VZW does with the data that it collects. GPS is exactly what you think it is - the phone calculates its position based on the CA and P codes from the GPS satellites.

Thanks all. I don't see any reason to run anything 'cept GPS location assuming you can get a fix. Am I missing anything?

Edit: Well, I just found out one reason to keep the Google Location Services checked. Your HTC Sense Clock Weather location does not work without it. The clock/weather prompted me to turn on Google location to get the weather location. I was already within 10 feet on my GPS/Maps. That's how I had it before - GPS and Google turned on, VZW turned off. Guess I'll leave it like that.

I have GPS turned on all day. It doesn't drain the battery unless you have an app using the service. So for me, it's a no-brainer to leave it on.

You can use the app GPS Status to help get a GPS fix much faster, within seconds usually.
