The reason I am asking is because people seem to refer to the GNex as either the GSM or LTE (VZW) versions. Does that mean that the GSM GNex can't receive a 4G LTE signal?

Correct the gsm can't use vzw or sprint lte. I don't even think it can connect to att 4g. It has a a added radio that's why the batteries are different

Nah...those are two seperate radios. Also, i believe that the gsm version has no 4G radio although i think it has HSPA+. Plus, the verizon makes and recieves calls via CDMA...thus the GSM version is equivalent to a shiny brink on VZW

OK, just so I understand - in those AT&T markets that have been upgraded to 4G LTE, a GSM GNex won't be able to connect to the 4G LTE AT&T signal. Correct?

I have a friend on AT&T in one of their 4G LTE markets and I want him to understand that he can't buy a GNex that he can use on AT&T that will be able to connect to their 4G LTE but I wanted to verify that I understand it correctly.

GNex will not do LTE on at&t. For that, you need an LTE phone they sell like the Skyrocket or Vivid. Verizon and Sprint phones don't work on at&t's network, period.

Thanks, I wonder if they will release a GNex GSM LTE for AT&T eventually?

It can't and won't. Completely different chipsets.

If you have an unlocked i9250 GSM Galaxy Nexus on AT&T, you will only get HSPA+. Not LTE.

What kind of speeds do you get with HSPA+? My guess is faster than 3G but slower than LTE, can anyone confirm?

HSPA+ on at&t has a theoretical max of 21 Mbps, but you'll likely get 3-5 in the real world. LTE is pulling 20+ in some markets, but it's not widely used on the network yet.

Varies widely by the region, tower, time of day, etc.. The radio in the Galaxy Nexus is a 21mbps one. Assuming the AT&T tower has been updated to at least 21mbps as well, you should expect real-world speeds up to about 12-14mbps. Like I said though, its dependent on many factors. Middle of the day in a city and you're looking at 5mbps.

The same goes for T-Mobile, although a lot of their towers are now 42mbps, which helps spread out the speeds a bit more. The real-world downlink on the phone is still probably capped around 14mbps.
