Cancelling text messages on samgung galaxy s3

So I went to send a text message last night before I went to bed but I always put my phone on airplane mode when I go to sleep (if that's bad for my phone someone please let me know). Anyway I put my phone in airplane mode before the message sent and when I woke up this morning it was still trying to send when I took it off of airplane mode. Well at this point I don't want to send the text message and my phone is still trying to send it while it is in airplane mode (like the circle beside the sending message is still there). I've shut off my phone and turned it back on, I took out the battery and put it back, and I tried to force stop the applicaton ( I'm using the original messaging app that came with the phone). Now I don't know if this makes a difference but I did all those things while in airplane mode. Is there any way I can stop this message from sending so that way I can have full use of my phone again?

Press and hold the message bubble and there will be an option to delete the message.

Does this work for the S5 as well?

I sent a message then deleted it while it was still in the process of sending (icon was still turning), and there is no record on my logs of the message being sent.

Just wondering if the message was still sent?
