Cannot change text size in "Messages"

My phone is Android 4.4.2 and came with the "Messaging" app. It allowed pinch-and-zoom to adjust the displayed font size. The latest and greatest "Messages" does not seem to have this capability. I'm not wanting to change the system font size, just the size used for displaying texts. Is this possible?

Mine changes using volume button, try that

I saw that in another thread, it must apply to other Androids and/or other text apps, it doesn't work for me

On my s5 Settings/Messages/Display/select change font size(use volume to change font size)

I can't tell if that is specific to your version of Android, or to Samsung, or to your specific phone, or to your carrier. But I can't find any setting like that, either in the "Android Messages" app or in my System Settings, for my LG Ultimate 2 running Android 4.4.2 provided by Tracfone.

The other thread that I found that suggests using the volume key to change the font size, is under the Samsung section here. Which may or may not mean anything.
